2nd Grade Weekly Fluency Frenzy
AZVA
One of our big goals is to develop fluent readers. Fluency is the ability to read accurately, quickly, and with expression. To help focus on fluency, as a school we are asking each student to track their reading fluency at home. This will only take 1 minute every day! Every week we ask that you download the weekly fluency passage. Each student should read the same fluency passage every day for the whole week. This will be a great activity to see reading growth.
Please keep in mind that this activity is to help each student see their improvements. It is not important to finish the whole story the first few reads but rather to see a slight increase with each read.
The difficulty of the reading passages will increase throughout the school year. If your student is having difficulty with a certain level, be sure to use iReady, Stride Tutoring, and Big Universe to practice additional stories throughout the week.
Weekly Reading Practice
Monday – 1st time reading this passage. No practicing, just read for 1 minute and count the words that are read correctly. (Skipped words will count as an error) Fill in your chart (below). Ex: I read 72 words. I made 2 errors. My total number of correct words would be 70 wpm. After recording your words per minute, you may review some of the words your child had difficulty with.
Tuesday – 2nd time reading the passage. Read for 1 minute and count the words that are read correctly. (Skipped words will count as an error) Fill in your chart.
Wednesday – 3rd time reading the passage. Read for 1 minute and count the words that are read correctly. (Skipped words will count as an error) Fill in your chart.
Thursday – 4th time reading the passage. Read for 1 minute and count the words that are read correctly. (Skipped words will count as an error) Fill in your chart.

Math Weekly Practice
Math
Each day of the week students will use this as a math warm up prior to starting their daily math lesson on the OLS. They will complete the box for the specific day of week and then the LC will sign the box. By the end of the week students will have reviewed several different math concepts that are critical for future math skills.
If your student has not learned the specific concept for the day, please quickly review it with them and do a brief introduction. Please also reach out to your child’s teacher and let them know what concept your student is struggling with so they can review it with them as well. These are all standards that 2nd graders will be required to know this year. We hope that doing these quick warmups will help your student learn new concepts and reinforce concepts already taught.
Writing Weekly Practice
Writing
In our virtual classroom, we cannot have our children physically write as often as we would in a brick-and-mortar classroom. While that is the case, handwriting is extremely important for many reasons:
- It strengthens our memory
- Improves learning and overall comprehension on material given
- It sharpens critical thinking
- Improves fine motor skills and much more
Keeping a journal and writing in its weekly can not only help our students improve on the items listed above, but it can help you as the Parent/ Learning Coach to track the progress and growth of your developing student! Please utilize the daily writing activities to get better in all areas of your writing.
Your teacher would love to see pictures of fluency growth charts. Take a picture and email every few weeks for them to see your student’s growth!
Set a goal to work towards & when your goal is met increase it to work towards a new one.
Let’s work hard to meet these goals!
