Team -

Solar Eclipse - 4/8/24:

We didn't want to miss out on the wonderful opportunity for our students to observe the solar eclipse next Monday. We will be conducting an evacuation drill between 6th/7th hour for the viewing. Our HPO has graciously purchased classes for everyone in the building. There is a high probability that there will only be a few minutes left of 7th hour once we report back into the building after viewing. I will meet with admin tomorrow to determine if we will just stay in 6th hour or if students will grab their things from 6th and report to 7th hour.

OSTP Testing:

Mr. McQueen sent out some information regarding Test Administrators and Test Proctors Training Modules. Please be sure to get your training done and send your certificate to Michelle Putnam. Also, core subjects, please be sure that you are backwards planning to prepare for your test. Can any cross curricular learning be done? What are your plans for review? How will you ensure that your students are prepared? Be sure that you are having these discussions with your PLC team/administrator.

Hiring/Resignations:

As mentioned at the last Faculty Meeting, we have reached that point in the year where the admin team is half "finishing this year" but also planning for next year. Planning starts with ensuring that we have the best possible teachers in front of our students. Please communicate with us if your plans are to explore other options. As much as we hate to see you go, the sooner we know the more time we have to set our students up for success by finding the best replacements.

Payday Breakfast:

Thank you, Electives team, for the delicious breakfast last Friday! It's always great to come together and be able to fill our bellies! We look forward to our last Payday breakfast hosted by our cafeteria staff in April!

OSTP Testing Schedule 2024 OSTP Testing Schedule 2024

Foundations Team Highlights:

On behalf of the Foundations team, I want to express our thanks to everyone for going above and beyond yesterday while the team was out. We realize the timing of this training day was not ideal.

We wanted to share some highlights of the work we completed yesterday in our continued effort to improve Heartland!

Highlights:

  • We presented what our school has implemented this year in the building to the other sites via a Gallery Walk. View our presentation here. I encourage you to watch it! We've done a lot this year!
  • We spent time debriefing on what other sites were doing/trying and came back with some ideas to try to implement next year as we continue to move forward. We also received some comments about our work/presentation. They were all very positive!
  • We had training from Instructor Dr. Kathy Hoes - we focused on having a proactive and positive behavior support system. What does our response look like to behavioral issues? We learned different strategies that we can implement at Heartland to help us improve student behavior and responses.
  • We had time as a team to do some Building planning for next school year. We have a few ideas to develop and try to implement next school year.
  • We also worked on more ideas on how to celebrate the wonderful things happening at Heartland.

The Foundations Team thanks you for all your input, survey responses and suggestions as we continue to move forward to make Heartland the best school in Edmond!

Benefits/Leave - Maternity Workshop

This is from an email Randy sent out earlier in the week. If you are even contemplating starting a family in the next year - I would highly recommend attending this workshop. As many of you know - the world of benefits and leave gets super complicated during this process so you want to make sure that you have all the accurate information. Additionally, there is a packet they give out that really helps guide the process.. See information below!!

Join the HR team and me on Wednesday, April 10th from 4:00- 5:00 pm for "What to Expect (From Your Benefits/Leave) When You're Expecting" - a virtual maternity leave workshop.

The 1 hour session is designed to walk participants through the processes related to taking maternity leave. Some of the topics discussed will be:

· How much time can I take off after having a baby?

· Does the amount of leave I have affect the amount of time I can take off?

· How will my paycheck be affected during my maternity leave?

· How does FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) work?

· How is my sick leave used during this time?

· Can I apply for disability?

· Can I apply for sick leave sharing?

Participants will be provided with an information packet on the week of the event which they can use during the session to further understand the length of their maternity leave and the financial impact during that time. Spouses or significant others are welcome to attend.

If interested, click on the link below to register for the workshop.

Student Identity Google Form

Per District Practice....

Below is a link that will be used to notify counselors should you have a student in your classes who has officially requested that you (the teacher) call them by a different identity. I will keep this in the Faculty Heartbeat each week so that it can be easily located. It will also be put on the Heartland HUB for educators. For now - if you have a student in your classes who has already made this request for this year - please go ahead and complete the form for them so the counselors can make sure we have made official notification with these families. Remember the following:

- Once a student has made this request of you the teacher - all you need to do is fill out the sheet and let the counselors/administrators handle this situation. You would continue to utilize the name in Infinite Campus until told that it is ok to make a switch.

STUDENT IDENTITY INFORMATION
Please use this form should a student request to be referred to by an identity that is different in comparison to what is in Infinite Campus.

2 ASSIGNMENTS/GRADES PER WEEK IN INFINITE CAMPUS

This is just a reminder that you need to enter 2 new assignments per week into infinite campus. Additionally, you should be scoring and entering grades into IC weekly. Your student's grades should be changing every week. Week #0 did not count but with week #1 ahead of us, each of your classes should have at least 2 assignments entered by the end of the week. Best practice is to have grades entered into IC within a week after they were due. It is particularly important that you are staying on top of this for our athletes. Let's do right by our kiddos!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WILL BE ABSENT

Now that we are in the swing of things, it is understandable that you may need to be absent for whatever reason. Please follow the below listed protocol so that we can ensure that your students are taken care of.

  1. Immediately enter your absence in Frontline Absence Management as soon as you think you may be absent. If you end up coming to work and your job fills with a substitute, we will use that sub elsewhere in the building. Your request needs to be put in the system BEFORE 6am the morning of your absence.
  2. Email all 3 administrators and Cheryl Thatcher to let us all know that you plan to be out as soon as you know. Cheryl will do her best to contact subs to get your job filled and the admin team will do our best to stop by your room throughout the day to ensure your students are well behaved and our substitutes feel supported.
  3. Contact your PLC partner(s) to let them know of your absence and whether or not assignments and supplies need to be printed and made available to your class. Please be sure that there are thoroughly written, step-by-step instructions and enough work to keep your students busy for the ENTIRE hour (and then some).
  4. Please do not just list that your assignment is on Canvas. Many students may come to class without a charged chromebook and the sub may not have access to Canvas. There needs to be written assignment instructions and printed copies for the sub to hand out.
  5. Ensure that your sub folder has a printed copy of your seating charts/class rosters, safety information, classroom procedures/expectations, site expectations and procedures and any other pertinent information that could be helpful. Although our students are angels, they will take advantage of the sub if they don't know better!
  6. Be sure to have a process or document that the sub can fill out to let you know how your classes went, how much of the assignment was completed and where to report those students that may have not been on their best behavior.
  7. Be sure to speak with ALL of your classes about your expectations while you are out.

How prepared/detailed your sub folders are and how your classes act can be the single most determining factor in whether or not that substitute comes back to our school. We do our absolute best to welcome and establish rapport with our subs so that they will return. We hate to have to compel teachers during their plan to cover classes so please do your part to ensure that our subs love Heartland and want to return!
