SAEBRS Screening SAEBRS Screening

February 2026

Dear Families,

District 62’s vision is to educate resilient, lifelong learners who think critically and solve problems collaboratively as they prepare for their future. Within this vision, both academics and social emotional learning serve as pillars in this important work.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) includes Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Research shows that students who master these skills have a greater sense of well-being and increased performance in school. The Illinois State Board of Education has implemented SEL standards as part of the Illinois Learning Standards for all students since 2003.

This spring, students will participate in a survey to help us better understand their SEL skills in the same way we screen for academic performance. This survey is called the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBRS).

The SAEBRS universal screener helps us understand students’ SEL skills and has two parts; one part is completed by your child’s teacher or teaching team for each individual student in grades K-8. The second part is a short survey completed only by students in grades 2-8. SAEBRS helps teachers determine which students may need more support with achieving SEL standards. For example, if students report that they "feel worried" or "argue with others," classroom teachers may help students manage these feelings and resolve conflict. You may review the teacher-completed questions, student questions, and additional information in the SAEBRS Parent Information document.

This spring, Forest will be administering SAEBRS from February 23-26, 2026. If you have any questions regarding the SAEBRS Survey or if you do not want your child to be included in the SAEBRS survey, please contact me directly by Monday, February 23.

Sincerely,

Ms. Soike, Principal
