Principal's Corner

Dear Tuscumbia School Community,

The last week of school is upon us, and I’m sure your student is more than excited for summer break to start. As we enter the final week of school, I want to take a moment to reflect on what a fantastic year it has been. From day one, students have shown incredible growth, curiosity, and resilience. It has truly been a joy to witness their learning journey and to be part of their academic and personal development.

This year has been filled with memorable moments, meaningful lessons, and countless accomplishments - both big and small. Your continued support at home has played a vital role in making this such a successful year, and I am deeply grateful for the strong partnership we've shared.

As we wrap up the school year and my time here at Tuscumbia, I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the past two years I've spent as part of this incredible school community. It has been an honor to teach, learn, and grow alongside your children, and to be welcomed so warmly by so many families. This community holds a special place in my heart, and I am thankful everyday for the opportunity to have been a part of it. Thank you for an amazing two years!

We will be having our end of year awards ceremony on Thursday, May 15. Parents, you are welcome to join us as students are given their awards from their teacher(s). Elementary students (1st - 4th grade) will have their awards ceremony at 12:30pm. **Kindergarten students received their awards at their tassel ceremony and will not have additional awards on this date. Middle school students (5th - 8th grade) will begin at 1:30pm and high school students (9th - 12th grade) will begin at 2pm.

If it isn’t already on your calendar, please join us next Friday, May 16 to celebrate our 2025 graduates. This day is also a half day for students. Congratulations, graduates! We are so proud of you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kirtley

Principal

Information for Getting a CDL to Drive a Bus

The process for getting a CDL is not difficult, and we will help you! Here is what you need to do:

  • Take the written portion of the exam. Here is the study guide. You can get a printed copy at any testing site. You will need to take the test for School Bus, Class B with passengers. You do NOT need to test for air brakes.
  • After you pass all portions, take the paper the testing site gives you to the license office and get your permit. You also have to take 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID.
  • Come see us--James Luttrell is our federally approved site trainer, and he will provide your training to take the pre-check and driving portions of the test. He will also take you to the testing site when you take the test. Before he does that, we will need you to complete an application and get a fingerprint background check to ensure you are eligible to work for the district.
  • After you pass your test, you will take your paperwork to the license office again with 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID and get your CDL.
  • Keep all of your receipts--we reimburse for the permit, CDL, and fingerprints, and we pay for the drug testing and physical.
  • As soon as you have a CDL, are approved by the Board, have a DOT physical, and pass a pre-employment drug test, you can sub bus routes and/or drive activity trips.

Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher?

If you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher and you do not have the required 36 college hours, you can do an online course that will allow you to get a substitute certificate. Here is the link to that course, and here is the link to the DESE web page that gives you more information about what you need to do to get a substitute certification. Our daily rate for subs for the 2024-25 school year will be $100/day!
