Rising Leaders Assembly
On Thursday afternoon, we celebrated another round of our Rising Leaders. Mr. Henry and Mr. Ortega started this recognition program to acknowledge our students that show up every day and do the right thing. Each teacher gets to nominate one student. This month students were treated to a motivational speech from Dr. Eugenia Roberts, former principal of North Brandywine Middle School. She spoke to them about leadership, service, hard work, and chasing their dreams.
Congratulations to March's Rising Leaders!

We Love Ms. Russum, Mrs. Shumate and Mrs. Lesniak
On Wednesday, we showered our amazing administrative professionals with flowers, cards and lunch to show our appreciation for all they do everyday to keep Scott Middle School running smoothly and safely. We are incredibly grateful for these lovely ladies!
Welcome, Dr. Wayne Wallace
Dr. Wayne Wallace has more than thirty years of experience in education across urban, rural, and suburban settings, including roles as a teacher in The School District of Philadelphia and at Gordon and Scott Middle Schools; as an assistant principal at South Brandywine, 9-10 Building, and CASH; as a principal at East Fallowfield Elementary; and as a college administrator. He holds degrees from West Chester University and Immaculata University, including a Doctorate in Education.
He was involved in a 21st-Century After-School Program at Gordon Middle School, Beyond the Bell, which received national recognition for its innovative academic and social-emotional supports for students. The program was selected from schools nationwide to be filmed. During the production phase, cameras and bright lights filled the room as students’ and teachers’ faces were carefully retouched for filming.
As the Interim Director of Minority Affairs at West Chester University, he developed an innovative program in partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles to enhance engagement among diverse student communities.
As the assistant principal at the high school, he founded the Latino Club, which fostered academic and cultural empowerment. During Hispanic Heritage Month, students performed traditional Puerto Rican and Mexican dances—Salsa, Merengue, and La Bamba—and concluded the celebration with a community fiesta for students and their families. He also organized a Vocational-Technical Career Fair during American Education Week and coordinated after-school programs that improved students’ PSSA scores.
Dr. Wallace’s commitment to the community is evident in his family. All three of his children graduated from the Coatesville Area School District. His daughter, Nashira, is a Howard University School of Nursing graduate, a registered nurse, and a licensed real estate agent. His son, Kareef, a West Chester University graduate, owns and manages Compete Sports Performance (athletic and fitness training) in West Chester. His youngest son, Armahn, is a Hallmark Institute of Photography graduate and a professional photographer. Dr. Wallace and his family are “Coatesville Proud.”
Congratulations to our 4x100 Penn Relay Team!

Dress Code Reminder
As the weather gets warmer, we’d like to remind families about our school dress code to ensure a comfortable and respectful learning environment for all students.
- Shorts and skirts should be an appropriate length (mid-thigh or longer).
- Tops should fully cover the midriff—no exposed stomachs.
- Clothing should provide appropriate coverage for all body parts while at school.
- Flip-flops are not permitted for safety reasons; students should wear secure, closed-toe footwear.
We appreciate your support in helping students come to school dressed appropriately and ready to learn each day.
All Electronic Devices Will Be Collected During PSSA Testing
In an era of cell phones, smartphones and other electronic devices which can easily photograph and instantly share photographs, confidential and secure test materials can be easily compromised. Not only is it expensive to replace a compromised test item, the material contained in the PSSA and Keystone Exams is copyrighted property of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Copying or duplicating the material from the assessment, including the taking of a photograph of secure assessment material, is a violation of the federal Copyright Act. Penalties for violations of
the Copyright Act may include the cost of replacing the compromised test item(s) or fines of no less than $750 up to $30,000 for a single violation (17 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).
In order to ensure reliable test results and to avoid the cost of replacing test items, the Department of Education requires schools to set rules and take certain steps to protect test materials. Electronic devices such as but not limited to cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, smart glasses, E-readers, Nooks, Kindles, iPods, tablets, camera- ready devices, and any other electronic device which can be used to photograph or duplicate test materials, access the internet and/or communicate with others during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams are not permitted in any testing site. Please speak with your child and let your child know that the possession and/or use of a cell phone or other electronic device during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams will result in consequences.
You will be contacted by the school if your child is discovered using and/or having a cell phone or other unapproved electronic device during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams. Students who ignore this directive will be subject to the school’s discipline policy and the Department of Education’s requirement that the student’s test will not be scored and the student will be required to retake the entire exam. The electronic device will be held by school staff, and the device’s stored photographs and other functions will be examined with your permission. You may request to be present when the electronic device is examined. If a photograph of the PSSA or Keystone Exam
is discovered or if permission to search other functions of the electronic device is refused, the device will be held by the school staff. The Pennsylvania Department of Education holds the copyright to all material contained within the PSSA and Keystone Exams, the Pennsylvania Department of Education will be contacted and further action may be taken.
If, after testing is complete, it is discovered that a student used and/or had a cell phone or other unapproved electronic device during the administration of the test, the school’s discipline policy will be followed and the student’s test will not be scored.

Important Information Regarding Energy Drinks
I wanted to take a moment to share some important information regarding student use of energy drinks, especially as we are on the heels of PSSA testing.
I recently read an article by Wendy Donald, “Energy Drinks and Today’s Youth: What School Nurses Need to Know,” and it highlights some concerning trends that are very relevant to what we’re seeing in schools.
A few key points that may be helpful to reinforce with your students:
- Energy drinks often contain more caffeine than recommended for adolescents. In fact, guidance suggests teens should consume no more than about 100 mg of caffeine per day, yet many energy drinks exceed that amount in a single serving.
- These drinks frequently include additional stimulants and high sugar content, which can contribute to negative health effects and, in some cases, require medical attention.
- National data shows that 30–50% of adolescents consume energy drinks, despite recommendations that they should not be part of a child or teen’s diet.
- Reported effects include increased heart rate, anxiety, dehydration, and difficulty sleeping, all of which can directly impact focus and performance in school.
With PSSA testing about to be underway, this is a great opportunity to remind students that:
- An energy drink is not a meal
- Skipping meals and relying on caffeine can lead to energy crashes, poor concentration, and decreased performance
- Balanced nutrition, hydration, and rest are far more effective for sustained focus and stamina
