Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - August 31, 2026
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
There’s really nothing quite like the first day of school. After weeks of preparation, our buildings suddenly come back to life with students, and the energy changes almost instantly.
As I made my way through our schools during the first two days, there were lots of happy, smiling faces—and, of course, a handful of tearful ones. Some students walked through the doors eager to reconnect with friends and teachers, while others, particularly some of our youngest learners, arrived a little more cautiously as they took in new classrooms, new teachers, and new routines. And there were certainly a few parents who found those first-day goodbyes a little difficult as well. These moments are always a wonderful reminder of the trust our families place in us each day and the important responsibility we have to make sure every child feels welcomed, supported, and ready to learn.
Overall, our first two days went very well. Buses were running late, as is typical during the first few days as drivers and families settle into new routes, but there were no major issues. With those first days now under our belts, we head into our first full week of school. This week will provide important time for our teachers to continue helping students—whether they are new to a grade, a building, or the district—learn the expectations and routines that will help set the tone for a successful year ahead.
Our staff also came together for our annual Convocation, and I want to thank the local and state leaders who joined us, including First Selectman Bruce Walczak; Legislative Council members Michelle Ku, Jordana Bloom, and Lily McHugh; State Representative Martin Foncello; and several members of our Board of Education. We appreciate each of you taking time from your busy schedules to participate in our annual kickoff. Having so many of our community leaders there alongside our faculty and staff was a meaningful reminder that the work of educating and supporting our students is something our entire community shares.
Convocation is also an opportunity to celebrate the people who make Newtown Public Schools such a special place. This year, we recognized our Teacher of the Year, Alexa Calo, and our Paraeducator of the Year, Sue Burbank, two individuals who represent the talent, dedication, and care that our staff bring to students each day. We also recognized those employees celebrating 25 years of service to Newtown Public Schools. Twenty-five years is an extraordinary commitment, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to acknowledge these colleagues in front of the entire district and thank them for the countless ways they have contributed to our schools and our students over the years.
Our guest speaker, George Couros, author of The Innovator’s Mindset and Forward, Together: Moving Schools From Conflict to Community, brought humor, energy, and some genuinely moving moments to his message. But what I think resonated most was his challenge to us as educators to think about the experience we create for students each day. He reminded us that relationships remain at the heart of great schools, even as the world around us—and the tools available to our students—continue to change. He encouraged us to remain curious, to embrace new possibilities, and, perhaps most importantly, to recognize and help develop the unique strengths and potential within every student.
George gave us plenty to laugh about, but he also gave us a great deal to think about as we begin this school year. His message aligned beautifully with our theme of Reflect, Refine, Reach Higher—reflecting on what we already do well, refining our practices as the needs of our students and the world around them evolve, and continuing to reach higher for the students and families we serve.
Finally, the District received some exciting news last week. Our application for Connecticut’s newly established High-Quality Special Education Incentive Grant Program was approved for $265,580. The funding will allow us to expand our in-district Program for Adaptive Learning (PAL) and will support a School Psychologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Board Certified Behavior Analyst, along with assistive communication technology, interactive instructional tools, and enhanced staff communication and safety equipment. We believe this investment will strengthen the services we are able to provide students within the program and expand our capacity to meet their needs right here in Newtown. We are thrilled to have been one of just 41 districts selected from 116 applicants to receive this important funding.
After months of planning and preparation, it is wonderful to have our students and staff back where they belong, together in our schools. There is always something special about the beginning of a new school year: new relationships to build, new challenges to tackle, and new opportunities for our students to discover what they are capable of. I am looking forward to all that lies ahead for Newtown Public Schools in 2026–27.
Warm regards,
Anne

Sue is the kind of person every school hopes to have on its team. A dedicated and caring paraeducator at Newtown Middle School, she brings kindness, positivity, and a wonderful sense of humor to her work each day. Sue is always there for her students, but her impact extends well beyond them—she is equally supportive of the colleagues around her and has a way of making hard days easier and good days better. We are incredibly fortunate to have Sue as part of the Newtown Public Schools community and proud to recognize her as our Paraeducator of the Year!
Congratulations to Teacher of the Year, Alexa Calo of MGS!

Alexa exemplifies the very best of our educators—creating a classroom where our youngest learners feel supported, encouraged, and excited to learn. Convocation Keynote Speaker, George Couros
Thank You, George Couros!
A special thank you to George Couros for helping us kick off the new school year with a message that made a real impact—while generating plenty of laughs along the way! George challenged us to think about relationships, engagement, innovation, and how we help every student recognize and develop their potential. His combination of humor, storytelling, and thought-provoking ideas gave us plenty to reflect on as we begin the year.

NHS Athletics
Free ECG Screening Coming to Newtown!
The Newtown High School Athletic Department is teaming up with In A Heartbeat, a CT-based nonprofit organization, to host a free ECG screening event in the Newtown High School main gymnasium on October 22nd from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a way to measure the heart’s electrical activity and can detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that can increase the risk of sudden cardiac death. ECGs are quick, painless, and easy, and can save lives! These arrhythmias that the ECG detects are
missed with just a stethoscope and may not cause any symptoms, which is why these screenings are so important to keep children safe!
This free event is open to all Newtown Public Schools students (K-12). The event will be staffed with volunteer technicians who will answer any questions you may have, and parents will receive ECG results from In A Heartbeat within two weeks. The event is voluntary and pre-registration is encouraged. Click here to register your child for this screening.

Meal Charging & MySchoolBucks
At Newtown Public Schools, we want every student to have access to a nutritious meal each school day. In accordance with our Board-approved Meal Charging Policy, students will not be denied a meal because of an outstanding meal account balance.
Families are encouraged to regularly monitor and maintain their child’s meal account. MySchoolBucks provides a convenient and secure way to manage school meal purchases from anywhere.
Through the website or mobile app, families can:
- Add money to a student’s meal account
- Set up automatic payments
- Check account balances and review purchase history
- Receive notifications when an account balance is low
If you haven’t already, we encourage families to create a MySchoolBucks account at www.myschoolbucks.com or download the mobile app. Keeping track of your child’s account and maintaining a positive balance helps make mealtimes simple and seamless.
For additional information about the district’s Meal Charging Policy, please visit the Newtown Public Schools website or contact your child’s school.
Get Involved, Be Connected, Have a Voice - Join a Newtown PTA!
Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is a group made up of parents, teachers, and sometimes community members who work together to support our schools. The primary goal of our PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools to create a positive learning environment for students. PTAs often organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, and volunteer programs. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.
In addition to fundraising, the PTA acts as a bridge between parents and school administrations. They advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders. PTAs also host meetings, or informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and administrators, our PTAs plays a crucial role in enriching the school community and supporting student success.
