Self-Appraisal, Reflection & Student Feedback Self-Appraisal, Reflection & Student Feedback

Nothing ever goes 100% according to plan. Activities that crashed mid-flight, classroom decisions we wish we could take back, and moments that leave us wondering what we've gotten ourselves into. We all make mistakes, but outside of tweaking a lesson in the moment, we don't always find time for self-appraisal, or designate opportunities to reflect deeply on our practice as a whole. It's clear that intentional reflection is one of the most significant means for improvement. When you pause to really think about what worked, what didn’t, and why, your teaching, classroom management, and planning all improve. Consider using the tools below as you enter the final week of the school year and find ways to be intentionally reflective.

Student Feedback

Hearing from the students you serve can be eye-opening. What did they like? What would they change? How do they rate their effort and engagement? Encouraging students to offer honest feedback and taking it to heart can help guide your own self-reflection.

Teacher Reflection

When the school year ends and you're packing up for the summer, consider taking 15 minutes to reflect on your practice so that you can continue to grow as an educator.

Progressive Grading Practices From "Distinguished Physical Education" by Gary Zaharatos

Part One focuses on strategies to establish a safe and welcome learning environment for all students in physical education classes. In it you'll find strategies for promoting inclusivity and engagement in PE, how to establish class rules and communicate high expectations for student behavior and how to optimize space and resources to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.

In Part Two, the focus shifts to instructional methods where the following topics are explored in great detail: Standards-Based Content and Language Objectives, Assessment, Feedback, Accountable talk Structures, Rigor, and Differentiation. There are also two chapters that describe distinguished elementary and secondary physical education lessons that incorporate the instructional methods outlined in the book.

Part Three begins with a compelling argument for why Social and Emotional Learning should be the focus of any distinguished physical education program and provides explicit examples for how to incorporate SEL into lessons throughout the year. The final two chapters provide teachers with real-world scenarios to reflect on and advice for how to approach job interviews.
