K8 Community Memo
March 23, 2025
Dear Charger Families,
Spring is here! With longer days and brighter skies, this season brings fresh opportunities for growth and renewal—both inside and outside the classroom. As we move forward, I want to update you on the Mary Walker School District Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy, which will be up for a re-vote on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
This levy provides funding for essential programs not fully covered by the state—such as staffing, student support, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Since the levy did not pass in February, we are asking our community to vote again to maintain these vital services.
If the levy does not pass, our school may face significant reductions, including:
- Fewer teachers, paraeducators, and support staff
- Reduced counselor, nurse, and student services
- Limited athletic programs and increased participation fees
- Cuts to student learning support programs
- Decreased safety and security resources
Your support is crucial to preserving these opportunities for our students. Thank you for being an important part of our school community.
A Message From Superintendent Spear
Teaching and Learning in the K8 School
With the help of Officer Matherly, our 3rd-grade students became junior detectives, using their investigative skills to follow clues left behind by a mischievous leprechaun—a fun and engaging way to learn about crime-solving!
K-8 math teachers dedicated part of Learning Improvement Day to sharpening their instructional strategies, focusing on new techniques to enhance student engagement and deepen mathematical understanding in the classroom.
Shoutout to Ms. Gearhart for leading an incredible hydroponic garden project! Her students harvested fresh bok choy and lettuce, creating a delicious salad to enjoy and share with their families. This hands-on experience not only taught science but also fostered community and a love for sustainable food practices.

Join the Fun—Pickleball is Here!
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and now it's easier than ever to play right here at our school! As part of our gym remodel, we’ve added official pickleball lines, making it a great space for this exciting sport that blends tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.
The Chewelah Pickleball Club (NEWPA) has also painted lines on our covered play area and is hosting games at 8 AM and 6 PM on weekdays. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, pickleball is fun, easy to learn, and a great way to stay active!
