Board Meetings Board Meetings

Board Meetings are the first Wednesday of the Month.

The location for meetings for this year will be at Lynda's house or via Zoom.

If you have something that needs to be brought to the attention of the Board, or you would like to discuss the issue in person, please contact a Board Member.

Board Meetings are open to all but only board members can vote at the meetings.

Tidbits from the President Tidbits from the President

Tidbits from the President

Happy November! So many things to do before the end of the year. I still have to make my ‘donation quilt’ before the December meeting (how is yours going?). I also need to get all my notes in order before I pass the presidency on to Cecilia. We will be voting on our slate of board members for 2026 at the November meeting (see details later in the newsletter). And we still need a president-elect. Please consider this.

For me, when things get stressful (as holidays often do), finding something simple to put together is a great relief. A NICU quilt, lap quilt. A step forward is always a pleasure. You can pull out a ‘UFO’ and just finish one small piece. Maybe a long term project (like my English paper piece stars) will do the trick. Whatever it is, I hope you have lots of fun things planned for the ‘holiday’ seasons to come.

New Officers New Officers

Here is the list of new Officers proposed by the Nominating Committee.

We are still looking for someone who might be willing to be the president-elect. Ideally, it would be someone who has been on the board before or someone who can be on the board this year to observe and learn how the board and President work together to move our guild forward. Thank you to all who have stepped up to serve. We will be voting to accept this board at the November meeting. Installation will take place at the December meeting.

If you decide you want to serve as president-elect, please contact me (Molly Risewick) before or at the meeting.

Profits will be calculated differently for the next show. Instead of % based on membership numbers, it will be based on participation (board, committee chairs, NTQF volunteer hours, EXPO volunteer hours, and number of quilts entered). So we need to ALL help in next year’s show to have money for our guild. More details to come.

And NTQF has already put in an order for Tshirts. They will be $20 each in pre-sales, $22 at the show.

Quilt Show Booth – HOLD EVERYTHING! Quilt Show Booth – HOLD EVERYTHING!

QUILT SHOW BOOTH

We’re already getting started on planning and producing for our guild booth at the North Texas Quilt Festival next summer. The theme for this year is

HOLD EVERYTHING!

We will be concentrating on all manner of things that hold other things, such as: project bags, tote bags, market bags, pencil cases, toiletry or tool bags, cord holders, microwave bowl holders, quilt bags, etc. We will also again be selling some of the things that proved popular this year. And, we are interpreting the theme fairly broadly. As Pat pointed out to me, placemats hold plates.

Here are some general guidelines:

Use the good fabric! If you wouldn’t buy it or gift it to a friend, we probably can’t sell it.

Try to make multiples. They don’t have to match, but it looks cluttered to have one of this and one of that.

Quality over quantity!

We made a very nice profit from the booth last year. We can repeat that if we all work together and start now. I am trying to set aside a few days a month to make something for the booth. My husband, a very tolerant man, thinks I did too much last year. Please help us out. We need YOU to help make this a successful endeavor.

Thank you in advance.

Grace Stroud and Pat Wagers, Sales Managers

Raffle Quilt Raffle Quilt

The 2026 raffle quilt is getting final applique by Karen Weisman.

Grace Jackson has agreed to ‘manage’ the quilt once completed. BIG thank you to Karen and Grace!

Sunshine and Shadows Sunshine and Shadows

Send Sunshine and Shadows directly to Ann Houpt: annhoupt@aol.com or via text message

Hospitality Hospitality

Hope everybody has adjusted to the time change. I wish they would just leave it Central Standard Time.

Veterans Day is 11 November. Let us remember to thank all those who have served and are still serving our great country.

At our November meeting, we will be having QOV presentations, so fix something special to bring for the refreshments -- finger foods, please.

Thank you. Serena Stroot and Linda Roeder for helping at the October meeting and volunteering again to help in November. I appreciate your help.

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Retreat Retreat

Reserve your place at the Guild Retreat!

Bring your $25 (or more) deposit to reserve your spot for our 2026 Retreat.

Dates: April 16-19

We have a great time and hope you’ll join us. We were nearly full last year, so make your reservation as soon as you can.

Quilts Of Valor (QOV) Quilts Of Valor (QOV)

Our program on November 18th will be our Quilts of Valor Award Ceremony.

Please join us as we recognize and honor several local veterans. Each veteran will receive a handmade patriotic quilt, made by our Guild members. You are encouraged to bring your friends and family.

Bev Ramsey Fund Bev Ramsey Fund

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

Just a reminder that we are collecting items for JPS at the Christmas meeting. Keep them in your sewing plans for November and December. Review the information in this section for ideas for your project.

-------

We encourage each member to read the information below, just to refresh your memory about all the items you can make for JPS. It’s not just NICU quilts. They love to get baby quilts of all sizes. The NICU quilts can’t contain flannel, but other quilts can. A new item added to the list is a wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Our donations are really appreciated by JPS, the moms, and any other patients who receive them.

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts -NO Flannel. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has also requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Bags to hang on walkers

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

New request — bags that can be attached to walkers to hold keys, water bottles and other small items.

After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG or JPEG pictures. Sometimes the PNG format also works. We can attach PDF, Word, and XL documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files that contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.

I would like to share pictures of show-and-tell items, but we must have someone willing to take pictures and email them to the guild email address.

If you are unable to bring your project to the meeting for Show and Share, send a picture to the guild address - with subject - Newsletter show n share. We can include a brief description
