Dear Families,
As we embark on an epic educational year, I encourage you to ask your child specific questions about their day, every day. General questions such as, "How was your day?" or "What did you learn today?" will typically be met with a response that leaves you wanting more. I know it did when I would ask my daughter those questions. Below are a few examples of questions that might get you the information and foster a conversation with your child:
General Questions:
- Was there a time today when you felt proud of yourself?
- Did anything make you laugh today?
- Who did you sit with at lunch today? What did you talk about?
Academic-Specific Questions:
- What book did you or your teacher read today? What was it about?
- Tell me one math problem you solved today. How did you figure it out?
- What are you writing about in class right now?
Social and Emotional Questions:
- Did you help anyone today or did someone help you? How did you or they help you?
- What's something kind someone said to you today?
- Was there anything that made you feel frustrated or confused today? How did you deal with that feeling?
Routines and Reflections:
- What was the hardest thing you did today?
- If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
- What are you most excited about doing at school tomorrow?
School Day

Lafayette School Corporation's Strategic Plan
The link below will take you to an interactive website that details the district's 5-year strategic plan. We are in year 3 of our strategic plan, and are making some great gains on our goals. Take a moment and see the strides LSC has made in areas such as Student Academics, Safe and Healthy Environments, Employee Growth and Development, Financial Stability and Resources, and Stakeholder Engagement.
Each goal area listed can be expanded with just a click to show the Action Steps we are taking, the Progress we are making, and the Due Date for our goals. If you haven't taken a look, I strongly encourage you to do so. There are many detailed, actionable steps we are taking to make our school corporation the best it can be for our students and families.
I am excited to be a part of this corporation and I hope you are as well!
Attendance
"Absences add up! Missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year." - Attendance Counts
Attendance is critical to the success of your student. Showing up and having a positive outlook is half the battle. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was quoted saying, "Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come."
Please make every attempt to have your child(ren) present and on time for school each and every day. I completely understand there are times in our lives where a situation comes up that can not be avoided. I also want students to be healthy, if they are truly ill, please keep them home.
Communication is Key
Be sure to...
Check your child's backpack each evening for important papers or classroom updates
Sign up for the platform that your child's teacher utilizes for communication (Class Dojo)
If you have a concern or question about your student or something happening in the classroom, be sure to reach out to your child's teacher first. Many times, I do not have all of the information in order to give you an in-depth answer. Communicating with the teacher first can save time, get the concern addressed quickly, and minimize frustration.
With that being said, if you still have questions after speaking with the teacher, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. 🙂 - Mr. Perry

It's My Closet
In December 2005, Jefferson High School opened a store called, It's My Closet, built on the belief in nurturing the whole child, a core value of the LSC mission. The store offers gently used clothing, furniture, and household items, and is open to all LSC students and their families-completely free of charge.
The store and donation center are housed in portable classrooms behind Durgan School, at the corner of 18th Street and Hiatt Drive. The Lafayette School Corporation generously provides the buildings and covers utility costs. The operation is fully volunteer run, no one receives compensation for their time or contributions.
Bring any letter or email from the school to register for shopping.
