PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This month our school focus is teamwork. We recognize that YOU are a valuable member of our team. This month, you will find surveys available in your myDSD account (available Feb.3-28). I want to emphasize the importance of your participation in these surveys.
Your input is invaluable in helping us understand our strengths and identify areas for improvement. By taking just a few minutes to share your thoughts, you play a critical role in shaping our school's future and supporting our students' educational experience.

We are especially focused this year on reinforcing the values of kindness and inclusion, which are essential life skills for our children. When families, teachers, and students work together, we create an environment where every child feels supported, valued, and empowered to learn and grow. I encourage you to complete our surveys, discuss positive interactions at home, and continue to be active partners in our school community.

KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP
* Please note: testing for incoming kindergarten students will take place the week before school starts (August 11-15). Exact dates and times will be sent home when the DSD schedules are finalized.
WINTER REMINDERS
The wintry season has arrived! Here are a few reminders:
- Decisions for late start will be made by district level administrators by 6 am. This information will be distributed to parents/guardians through text messages, emails, and social media posts. If a remote learning day is determined necessary, that decision will be made by 8 am through the same distribution.
- Information for school closures/late start due to weather is linked here. Please make sure your contact information is current so you receive notifications.
- Students should come prepared each day to be outside with appropriate outer wear (including coats, hats, gloves, and shoes/boots).
- Indoor morning and/or recess will be called when the temperature drops below 20 degrees and/or the conditions are unsafe (wind, rain, sleet, hail, snow, etc.) Students should come prepared to be outside before school starts and for recess.
- As a reminder, outside supervision begins at 8:35. Breakfast service begins at 8:30.
FEBRUARY FOCUS: TEAMWORK
Are you planning to watch the Super Bowl? No doubt we’ll see lots of examples of excited fans and stories about how the players must work together to win the game. As a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, we work together and cheer for one another. Take a few minutes this month to talk with your child about teamwork:
- Talk with your child about a time you were a member of a team. How did teamwork make the group stronger? Has your child been on a team? What was the experience like?
- The letters in “team” just happen to stand for “Together everyone achieves more.” Talk with your child about how that saying applies to school.
- Have you heard about Fans in the Stands? This program encourages students and families to attend a local Special Olympics event. Does this sound like something our family could do together to have fun and make a difference?

ATTENDANCE
Student attendance is critical in elementary school, as it forms the foundation for academic and social development. Regular school participation ensures children learn essential skills, maintain academic progress, and develop a positive attitude toward education. Frequent absences can create significant learning gaps and hinder a child's ability to understand core curriculum concepts. By attending school consistently, students build important social skills, establish routine and discipline, and receive continuous instructional support. Emphasizing the importance of attendance helps students develop strong educational habits that will benefit them throughout their academic journey.
Our students are engaged in 120 minutes of literacy instruction each day- that 10 hours each week! We know that illnesses occur, and we thank you for keeping children home when they are sick and communicating with your child's teacher.
When students are at risk of becoming chronically absent (18 or more absences in a school year) we follow a progressive attendance plan that includes:
- attendance interventions with teacher, administration, family advocate
- attendance letters sent at increments
- attendance support meeting with parents, administration, teacher, family advocate
- referral to district attendance support specialists
Thank you for your continued effort to ensure your students arrive to school on time each day!
BOUNDARY PERMITS
Parents/guardians who have applied for a boundary permit will be contacted to schedule a meeting with Principal Vincent in March. If you questions, please contact Principal Vincent.

It's always a good time to show appreciation and kindness!
- Does your child have a teacher, see a reading/math tutor, go to DEEP, enjoy recess, eat lunch, ride the bus, loose teeth, call home, or receive help from an adult at school?
- Has an employee at the school done something to help make your child's school experience a little better?
