December is here! As we return from Thanksgiving break, students will begin taking mid-year assessments. This is an exciting time as we get to witness student growth from the beginning of the year to now. Your child's teacher will communicate the schedule for their grade-level assessments.
Students in grades 1st-5th will complete their winter On Demand writing assessment. This mid-year assessments allows teachers to see specific growth in students' writing compared to the beginning of the year and plan for how best to meet a wide variety of student needs moving forward.
All students in grades K-5th will take the winter iReady test for Reading and Math. We know this assessment can be long and boring, but it is important that every student give their best effort as the results show us a picture of which standards students have mastered for the first half of the year and which ones still need strengthening. Teachers will use this data to plan small group instruction to bridge any learning gaps there may be and to challenge students to go deeper in their knowledge.
Girls Basketball are Central Area Champions!
COngrats to both our boys and girls teams for a great season. The boys fought hard and truly gave it everything they had, but their season ended without a bid to the championships.
Our girls played today and after an undefeated season, brought home the win over Cedar Grove to be named the Girls Basketball Central Area Champions!
Thank you to coaches Kyle and Kelly Roach and assistant coach Stephanie Troutman for the time they invested in both teams to not only mold them in better players but to help shape them into great human as well. Thank you!
Countdown to Winter Break
ID required for school events
We hate having to turn family away from awards ceremonies and other family events during the school day, but student safety is our first priority.
We are a Title 1 School
What does this mean?
A Title I school is a public school receiving federal funding through the Title I, Part A program of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. These funds are allocated to schools with a high percentage of students from low-income families to help raise academic achievement for all students, particularly those at risk of failing to meet state standards.
How does LJES use Title 1 funds?
Title I funds supplement, rather than replace, state and local funding and can be used for various activities, such as hiring more teachers, providing additional instructional supplies, implementing after-school programs, or supporting parental involvement.
Here at LJES, we use our funding to:
- pay for half of the school librarian
- hire an additional staff member to work with small groups throughout the school day
- purchase technology that accompanies our Reading and Math curriculum to enable teachers to plan and meet individual needs
- pay for staff to receive training to further their teaching skills and knowledge
