Emergency Drills - We Practice Regularly Emergency Drills - We Practice Regularly

zoom_out_map
Lockdown Drill Complete: This week we practiced our first Lockdown drill of the year. We practice a Lockdown to be prepared in case of an emergency so all students and staff know what to do. Here's a summary of how it went.
  • Teachers, staff, and students knew what to do and were prepared for the Lockdown Drill.
  • Staff locked doors, turned off the lights, and all students and staff got out of sight.
  • The drill was conducted in a calm, quiet, and orderly manner and staff talked to students about the reason we practice the drill.

Bus Evacuation Drill: Our first Bus Evacuation Drill will be on Tuesday next week, September 13. As with our first Fire Drill and Lockdown Drill, you may want to talk with your student about the Bus Evacuation Drill ahead of time to help him or her to be ready.

Future Drills: Next month, we will practice our first Earthquake Drill. We will continue to provide more specifics on these drills prior to our first ones of the year.

MAP Growth Season/Introducing MAP Growth MAP Growth Season/Introducing MAP Growth

Dear Parent,

Starting September 16th, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.

MAP Growth tests are unique and adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s knowledge. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of where your child is on their learning journey— regardless of whether they are on, above, or below their grade level.

Because MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores in similar skills and topics and then plan instruction accordingly.

MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students in the same grade and subject with the same starting performance level.Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.

We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Sincerely,

Teresa Alfaro - Principal

Ideas for Parents - Conversations with Your Students Ideas for Parents - Conversations with Your Students

After school each day, we encourage you to check in with your student to find out how it went. Some students are ready to talk right away, others may need a little time before they're ready. As a helpful guide, here are some questions you might consider, perhaps picking one or two each day.

  • What made you smile today?
  • What’s something new that you learned?
  • What was something interesting that happened?
  • Who is someone who helped you today?
  • What are you most proud of today?
  • What students did you spend time with today?
  • Who did you sit with during lunch?
  • What did you do during recess and who was with you?
  • What did you learn during (math, reading, etc.)?
  • What was the most difficult thing that happened today?
  • If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
  • What’s something that you’re looking forward to getting to do tomorrow?

Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance

zoom_out_map

This year we are continuing to pay close attention to ensuring that children are present at school regularly, because Every Day Matters.

Setting High Goals: We're focusing on attendance because last year 58% of our students were regular attenders (attended more than 90% of the days) and 42% were chronically absent (attended less than 90% of the days). The 58% was an improvement from the previous year when we had 51% of our students who were regular attenders. For the current school year our school leadership has set the goal to improve from 58% up to 70%. WE CAN DO IT!

So Important: There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and student success in school. Please see the visual below for more information.
