News and Notes
October is Bullying Prevention Month. This month, students are learning about what bullying looks like and what it means to be a bystander (watch something happen) vs. what it means to be an upstander (standing up for friends and/or reporting a concern.) We use the Second Step Bullying Units to help students understand how to handle difficult situations and how to get help from adults. Please see the video below about National Bullying Prevention Month and the difference between conflict and bullying.
October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are so grateful to our amazing survivor, Ms. Callahan, for organizing some very special events and service projects to support those in treatment and recovery. Please see the flyer below on ways you and your child can help support these important causes! (More information to come!)
This week and next we will also celebrate Red Ribbon Week. This week encourages students to say NO! to drugs of all kinds and to be safe at school and beyond. Please see the flyer below on spirit week for Red Ribbon Week!
Families received reports from our Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). Scholars take this assessment three times each year so we can measure students' growth and see how their level of performance, as well as growth, compares to their peers nationwide. Please see your child's score to see how they compare to the average student in their grade level. If your child scored below the grade-level average, you may also receive an Aimsweb report. These assessments are given to students who need additional academic support to be successful. The Aimsweb assessments are quick fluency measures that allow staff to monitor progress more frequently and ensure our Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions support students appropriately as they develop their skills. Our goal is always to work towards standards mastery. If you have any questions about your child's fall assessment reports, please contact your classroom teacher or our Instructional Coach, Nancy Larocca, for more information.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) at HH
CKH - The Leadworthy Character Trait for October is Self-Direct -Think, Choose, Act
Self-direction is the ability and learned skill to cast a vision of future goals and then take intentional steps toward who, where, and what we want to be. Instead of focusing on things to control or avoid, we emphasize our responsibility to make positive choices related to our emotions, attitudes, and actions.
Cool Tool Description: At Heather Hill School, we follow the Quick, Quiet, and Clean Cool Tool while in the bathroom. This means we are quick and quiet while in the bathroom, and we clean our hands for at least 20 seconds before leaving the bathroom. We use the soap dispenser only one time, and make sure our hands are underneath it to catch the soap. If there are too many students in the bathroom, wait outside in line until someone leaves. (There should only be as many students in the bathroom as there are stalls.) If we follow these expectations, we are being respectful, responsible, and safe while in the bathroom.
Food Service
Food Service
If your child will be receiving breakfast or lunch and they have any allergies, a form detailing their dietary needs must be submitted to the school nurse. It will be shared with the food service company and alternative foods will be available to meet a student’s needs. This form is available in the front office.
