Ms. Hanson's Notes
It’s been a fantastic week here on the Ave! We loved seeing everyone at the 3rd and 4th Grade Night of Expressions, and we’re excited for the 5th grade performance tonight.
A big thank you to all those who helped us celebrate Black History Month. Mr. Ray created the slideshow displayed throughout the school, while several staff members, led by Ms. Burns, Ms. Cain, and Ms. Stewart (from Wilson), wrote, directed, and rehearsed the entire Color & Culture performances. Mr. Stewart organized the Black History Bowl, and the PTO supported and coordinated the performances from Guitar Shed.
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on our Teacher of the Year for the 2025-26 school year, Ms. Edwin Ellis. Ms. Ellis currently teaches Links here at F.AVE, and she also coordinates our after-school tutoring program, Scholars on the Ave. Additionally, she designed and implemented our student mentoring program, Falcon Friends. Congratulations, Ms. Ellis!
2025-2026 F.AVE Teacher of the Year
My name is Edwin Amelia Ellis. I was born here in Atlanta, Georgia. (So yes, I am one of the rare GA peaches) This is my thirtieth year of teaching. During that time, I have taught second, third, and fourth grades. I have also served as an EIP teacher, and this is my seventh year teaching Links at FAVE. I began my career in Kilpatrick Elementary in Clayton County Schools, where I earned the Golden Apple Award on multiple occasions, which recognized outstanding teachers for their accomplishments in the classroom. From there, I moved to Brockett Elementary in the DeKalb County School system, where I was recognized as Teacher of the Year for the 2008-2009 school year. I remained at Brockett for fourteen years. In 2014 I began teaching in City Schools of Decatur at Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary. My family and I live in the Stone Mountain area. I have a fifteen-year-old daughter who attends Decatur High School. In my spare time, I absolutely love reading good books, traveling to new and exciting places and exercising for good health!
5th Grade Parents/Guardians: SAVE THE DATE!
Join us on Thursday, March 27th from 6:30-8:00 pm for our Rising 6th Grade Parent Night at Beacon Hill Middle School.
Nurse's Notes
Here is some important information if your child has an itchy scalp and you suspect it is LICE.
What are lice? Lice are parasitic insects that reside and lay eggs near the scalp. Adult lice are the size of a sesame seed and are brownish. The egg cases of lice (nits) are laid close to the scalp and are extremely small- approximately the size of a knot in thread. Nits are tear-shaped and attached firmly to the hair shaft. Head-to-head contact with an infected person is the most common way to get lice. Lice do not fly, jump, or hop. They crawl.
What to look for: If your child complains of an itchy or "tickling" scalp or you observe scratches/sores on the scalp, check for lice or nits. If you are unsure what to look for, please contact the school nurse for assistance. When checking your child, pay close attention to the nape of the neck and the area behind the ears.
What do I do if my child has lice? If your child has lice, please inform the school. Once you have initiated treatment of your child for lice, they may return to school. Please note: It is essential to check your child's hair daily for 10-14 days after treatment to remove any nits you may have missed.
How can I prevent lice? To prevent lice, minimize head-to-head contact. Teach children to minimize contact with other students. For example, "fist bump" or "air hug" as a greeting (rather than hugging). Discourage sharing items such as hats, brushes, headbands, coats, and scarves. Wearing mousse, gel, or oil in your hair (applied close to the roots of the hair) and wearing hair pulled back in braids or pigtails also helps decrease the chances of getting lice. Classroom checks of students have proven ineffective in predicting/assessing cases of head lice in schools. As a result, City Schools of Decatur is not enforcing this practice.
Enrollment Begins for New Students and All Rising Kindergarteners
The 2025-2026 CSD enrollment opens on Monday, March 3, for rising Kindergarten students or students new to CSD. Registration may be completed entirely online. Find more registration information here.
New Families: See CSD's Key Contacts & Resources for Families, available in multiple languages.
REMINDER: If your currently enrolled student has a sibling who will be new to CSD for the 2025-2026 school year, you must register this new sibling via the Parent Portal.
1. Select "More" from the menu in the Parent Portal.
2. Select "Annual Data Update."
3. Select "2025-2026 New Student Registration."
As part of the enrollment process, you will also need to email residency documentation to CSD's district enrollment specialist, Patrice Moore, at pmoore@csdecatur.net, as the Parent Portal will not allow you to change or upload this field. Information about required residency proof documents is available on the CSD website. Please contact pmoore@csdecatur.net or 404-371-3601 x1063 for assistance.
SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY
We have only 38% of F.AVE families who have completed the Family Climate Survey. I would like to share a friendly reminder that your voice is very important and we want your feedback! Responses are confidential and will be combined with the survey responses of other F.AVE families to identify areas in need of improvement. See directions below.
The City Schools of Decatur appreciates the contributions of parents, students, and employees. Each year, CSD takes part in annual school climate surveys and climate star ratings organized by the Georgia Department of Education. The outcomes will contribute to our district's School Climate Star Ratings, which are included in each school's yearly College and Career Ready Performance Index. All public schools in Georgia participate in a Student Health Survey, Parent Survey, and School Personnel Survey as part of the school climate survey process. Please complete the F.AVE Family Climate Survey. It will take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Thank you for your time and participation.
