Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a systems approach supported by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Jackson R-2 School District to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. It is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. As a part of PBIS, we have established clear expectations for behavior in all areas of our school. We explicitly teach these expectations to the students and recognize their efforts. You will be able to ask your child, “What are the expectations in your school?” “How do you follow those expectations?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the expectations?” Our school expectations will specifically address bullying behaviors, provide for a safer school environment, and give more time for instruction. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all students. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching them to students in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building. We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow. We would like your input and your involvement. Please contact us at school if you have any questions or need further information. Thank you for your support!

What is tier 1?

Tier 1 is the system we have created to provide universal support to all students. Each teacher has a PBIS time every morning dedicated to teaching expectation lessons. All of our incentives and consequences are laid out in our tier 1 plan. The overall goal of tier 1 is to use preventive and proactive management strategies.

What is tier 2?

At times, students require more support than tier 1 alone. Tier 2 provides targeted individual and small group interventions for students who are at-risk of negative social, emotional, and/or behavioral health outcomes. We use data to determine students requiring tier 2 interventions as well as take referrals from parents and teachers.

What is tier 3?

When a student continues to have difficulty after participating in both tier 1 and tier 2, more intensive supports are provided in Tier 3. The PBIS team works together to observe, collect data, and conduct interviews in order to complete a functional behavioral assessment. From there, a behavior improvement plan is created for the student.

East Elementary PBIS Expectation Videos East Elementary PBIS Expectation Videos

Please take a moment to check out our PBIS videos on YouTube! There is one for each setting of our school: classroom, hallway/stairway, restroom, cafeteria, and playground. East teachers and students explain and model the expectations from our matrix. Our student video production team plan to update these videos this school year!

Individual Spirit Tickets

As student follow our school-wide expectations, teachers acknowledge their appropriate behavior by giving a spirit ticket. As students earn spirit tickets, they can cash them in for an item or opportunity.

Classroom Spirit Tickets

A classroom works as a team to follow the expectations throughout the day to earn spirit tickets. Classes can earn spirit tickets for working well as a team in the classroom, cafeteria, when lining up, special class, etc. Once a classroom accumulates 20 spirit tickets, they receive a classroom incentive.

Discouraging Inappropriate Behavior Discouraging Inappropriate Behavior

During the first few weeks of school, students will learn about the expectations and procedures in all settings of the school. They will also learn about the process taken when they do not follow the expectations. A student will be asked the following questions

  1. What are you doing?
  2. What should you be doing?
  3. What will you do next time?
  4. What is going to happen if you break our expectations again?

Step 1: Student is sent to the think spot in the classroom.

Step 2: Student is sent to the buddy room (a partner teacher's classroom).

Step 3: Student is sent to a response team member and parents are contacted.

Step 4: The student is sent to the principal for a major office referral.

These questions and consequences are no secret and are discussed and modeled for students. Students know exactly what to expect if they do not follow our school wide expectations.

Students will learn it's okay to make mistakes. They will learn from them and grow! We teach students our 1 - 2 - 3 Rule and how it can be used in any situation...on the playground, in the classroom, standing in line for lunch, etc. We also teach the Four Square Apology. We do not require students to apologize, but this tool can help them if they decide it's the best thing to do. Both of these posters are posted in each classroom and on each playground.

Along with our three expectations safe, respectful, and responsible, we learn to be a T.R.I.B.E. (Trust, Respect, Integrity, Belonging, and Empathy). Students learn the meaning of T.R.I.B.E. and how to apply these traits to their daily life during morning meeting with their classroom. We will celebrate TRIBE with a Fun Run in March!
