Al Harteneck couldn't stay away. The students, he said, are the reason.

Yes, he's really back! Yes, he's really back!

GET TO KNOW AL HARTENECK (AGAIN)

The district has a “new” employee. His official first day on the job was Feb. 9. You might not recognize him, but the students certainly do: Al Harteneck.

First hired as a custodian in 1979, he worked at the old Central High School, then at Red Wing High School when it opened in 1995. He talked about retiring, but shifted to part-time head custodian in 2021. Harteneck officially retired Dec. 31, 2025.

That lasted a month.

Why did you “fail” retirement, i.e. what brought you back?

Well, I wasn't ready to stay home yet. I also missed the students and the staff.

Did you ever imagine you’d make Red Wing Public Schools your career (twice)?

Not really. But a friend told me they had a job opening at the time. I applied for it and they gave me the job. It’s been a great job and I love my job very much.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I love taking care of the students and the staff. Also keeping the building clean and a safe place for the students and staff. Taking care of people has been my life all these years.

How do you spend your free time outside of school?

Well I love spending time with my grandson. Going to his football and basketball games is lots of fun. Going to the Wingers games is lots of fun. Playing cards with my friends or just relaxing.

Award part of Aspirations in Computing

Beatrix Lahammer has been selected as a Minnesota Aspirations in Computing (MnAiC) Rising Star, part of the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing program. She will be one of 34 students statewide recognized at this level at an awards ceremony this spring.

Beatrix is the first Red Wing student in the history of the MnAiC program to be recognized. This honor reflects the new opportunities provided by Flight Path 2030 — Red Wing Public Schools’ initiative to expand access to computer science, data science, and AI pathways. As coursework, career exploration, and industry-connected learning increase, students are earning recognition and gaining beyond our district.

Thanks to the work of the Minnesota Technology Association, Beatrix can participate in state-level programming that includes mentorship, professional skill development, and technology career exploration.

Students interested in applying next year are encouraged to join the National AiC community now to receive updates and be notified when the next application window opens.

CONFERENCES ARE MARCH 5

Did you know that Red Wing provides several ways students can earn college credits free of charge?

Red Wing High School will hold open-house style conferences from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 5. People should take note, however, that there will be four scheduled presentations where students and their families can learn more about earning college credits:

PSEO

The Postsecondary Enrollment Options or PSEO program allows students in grades 10, 11 and 12 to earn college credit through enrollment in and successful completion of college courses at eligible postsecondary institutions, including Minnesota State College Southeast’s Red Wing campus.

High school counselors Clara Ballard and Christina Frye will give two presentations – the first at 1 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m. Each will last approximately 30 minutes, including time for questions. No appointments are necessary; simply plan your visits with classroom teachers before and after these sessions.

Red Wing College Promise

Local graduates can earn college credits – including career certificates, diplomas and two-year degrees – through the Red Wing College Promise. Funded by the generosity of the Jones Family Foundation, the program covers tuition and fees up to 70 credits at Minnesota State College Southeast.

Navigator Diane Jacobson will hold informational sessions at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. during conferences.

College in the Schools

Red Wing High School also offers classes taught by our teachers, helping students simultaneously earn high school and college credit. These include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Concurrent Enrollment, and College-Level Examination Programs in subjects from biology and chemistry to literature and language.

For a complete list, visit the RWHS webpage and scroll down to Dual Credit Options/College in the Schools. Interested students are encouraged to speak with teachers and counselors during the open house conferences.
