The Week of September 8th, 2025

From the Desk of the Principal
Sometimes the mark of a good week is how quickly it passes from day to day. After we all returned a little sleepy-eyed from the extended Labor Day weekend, students joined in a wonderful all-school Mass on Tuesday with Father Mike and Bishop Bartosic. A few raindrops on Wednesday didn’t keep us from recess, and by Friday we were holding student council elections (details below). Results will be shared Monday, but for now let's enjoy a nice fall weekend.
School Wide Testing: 9/9-12, 9/16-19
This week, we will begin our beginning-of-the-year testing window. On Tuesday, September 9th our kindergarteners to 8th graders will begin iReady baseline testing with math. Make-up testing and extended testing will occur through Friday.
Starting next Tuesday, September 16th, students will then begin their iReady reading baseline testing (similarly culminating Friday). This data will be used to assess student skills at the start of this still new school year and teachers will form growth goals for individual students and entire classes.
Also during this upcoming week our PreK students will engage in their first set of skills assessments, interacting with the Brigance assessment to initially measure things like language development and some early childhood academic benchmarks.
Parents, please ensure students get a good night's sleep and have a healthy breakfast ahead of testing. Encourage them to do their best but reinforce that no single test defines them as students: this is purely to provide teachers with a snapshot of where classes are at with grade level content and skills.

3rd Grade: Sampling Different Genres
For our first class spotlight, this week it's the 3rd graders. Students in Mrs. Cosme's class and Mrs. Kern's class got a chance to sample some different styles of books by doing a ten table 'tasting' of different genres. Students looked at historical fiction, mysteries, mystery, graphic novels and more! What a neat way to end the week and to learn about genres of books we may normally not seek out.
School Handbook 2025-2026
Please review the school handbook for the 2025-2026 school year. In the spring, ahead of considering modifications and improvements for the handbook for next school year, we will hold volunteer panels to gather parent feedback. Additionally, there is a School Advisory Board (SAB) meeting at 7pm on Monday, September 8th that is always open to parents and parishioners.
Hot Lunch Menu
Please see the September calendar below. Orders for Monday-Friday must be entered one week in advance. As of tonight, Sunday, August 31st, orders must be logged for meals September 8th-12th.
Eagle Hour Begins Next Week
We are still accepting registrations through the start of next week. Please reach out to Mrs. Bridget Lenihan (blenihan@ck-school.org) with questions.
Interested? Please sign your student up here by the end of this week:
Parent Poll
Last week's football poll brought out some interesting results! With 102 respondents, rooting for our hometown Chicago Bears narrowly beat out cheering on our favorite college football teams. Surprisingly, the local high school teams were the lowest vote getters despite tonight being two excellent area matchups with Br. Rice-Marist and Mt. Carmel-St. Rita.
