The Family Flyer

February Edition

The FamilyFlyer February Edition

Purpose

The Family Flyer is created by Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) coaches and coordinators. Our hope is that parents and caretakers, countywide, take advantage of the resources to support their kindergarten through third grade children with academics, nutrition, and well-being. New events and resources will be published monthly. Please contact Education and Learning at the GISD if you have any questions. The contact information is located at the bottom of this flyer. It is our hope that you find this resource useful and fun. Enjoy!

Forward Counting Bump

Join our math partnership coach and her children for a math game demo! Watch the quick video in this link demonstrating a quick and easy game you can play at home. All you need is some paper, a pencil, a paper clip, and something to use to mark your spot on the game board.

You can easily make this game simple for beginning counters or more challenging for students in higher grades. Just adjust the numbers on the homemade spinners or change the number you count by.

Have fun playing!

Helpful Hints To Practice At Home Helpful Hints To Practice At Home

Tip #1: Talking While Reading

Below you will see an adult reading to a child. Notice how they offer child friendly explanations and ask questions throughout the story. These are great supports for your young reader!
1.1 Talking While You Read (Bear Says Thanks)

Tip #2: Creating Real Life Math Experiences at Home

A great way to practice math skills is playing store at home. You can get out actual coins like in the video below and label items you have around the house with prices. Your child can count coins for their purchase. For younger children, try asking for delivery of a certain number of objects. Ask your child to write the number on an order sheet then have them count the objects to deliver them. Your child will have so much fun and won't even realize they are practicing math skills!
