The Great California ShakeOut — What a Drill!
On Thursday, at approximately 9:00 a.m., the sound of earthquake shaking echoed across campus, followed by our earthquake warning alert. Students and staff immediately dropped, covered, and held on until the shaking stopped. Teachers and instructional aides then quickly escorted students to the upper yard. We were officially participating in the 2026 Great California ShakeOut!
And that's when the real action began!
Teachers took attendance while our Assembly Area leaders accounted for students and staff and relayed information to our Command Center. We even recruited a few fearless Student Council members to play the roles of missing and injured students. They were more than happy to help make things interesting!
Meanwhile, our emergency teams sprang into action! Search and Rescue teams grabbed their equipment and headed out to find our missing students. The Triage and Psychological First Aid teams set up their stations, while the Security Team secured the campus, checked for hazards, shut off the gas, and delivered emergency supplies. Our Request and Reunion teams practiced safely reuniting students with their parents.
It was quite a production!
Our Search and Rescue teams searched every nook and cranny of campus and successfully located and rescued SIX missing or injured people! A special shout-out goes to Paul, our third-grade teacher, who single-handedly rescued THREE people AND put out a rather large simulated fire! Way to go, Paul! What a SUPERHERO!
But here's what impressed me most: Our students were absolutely wonderful! While all this excitement was happening around them, they remained calm, followed directions, and quietly chatted, played games, or read books. You would never have guessed there was an emergency drill happening!
The entire drill lasted just over 30 minutes, and by the end of recess, life at Community was back to normal!
Of course, a real emergency would bring challenges we can't fully recreate during a drill. That's why we practice—to strengthen our procedures, work out the kinks, and make sure everyone knows what to do.
A HUGE thank you to our teachers, instructional aides, office and support staff, and especially our student volunteers! Everyone worked together beautifully, and I couldn't be prouder of our team.
Keeping our students safe is always our number one priority, and Thursday was a wonderful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together.
Best,
Toni
Welcome Back, Sandra Martinez!
Welcome Back, Sandra Martinez!
We are thrilled to welcome our former first-grade teacher, Sandra Martinez, back to our teaching staff in a new role as Resource Specialist! Rather than serving as a classroom teacher, Sandra will now be part of our Special Education team, working alongside Cindy and the rest of the team to provide specialized academic instruction and support to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Her role will include helping students meet their individual learning goals and collaborating with classroom teachers to support student success.
Thanks to the persistence, determination, and advocacy of our incredible school community, we were able to bring Sandra back to Community!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to write letters to the district in support of Sandra's return. This is a wonderful example of what we can accomplish when our Community comes together!
Introducing the 2026-27 Student Council
Congratulations to our 2026–27 Student Council members, who were elected by their peers to represent our student body! We are so proud of these young leaders and look forward to seeing the wonderful ideas, enthusiasm, and leadership they bring to our school community!
President: Emma Salas-Mejia
Vice President: Avaline Mualim

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Through Music!
In case you missed it, our talented 3rd and 4th grade students entertained and educated us with wonderful performances celebrating the accomplishments, contributions, and struggles of Hispanic and Latino Americans!
Our 3rd grade classes performed two meaningful songs honoring Hispanic heritage and culture: Viva México by Aída Cuevas and Hispanic Heroes Who Changed the World.
Our 4th grade classes treated us to three memorable songs: Aquí No Es Así by Caifanes, Amor Eterno by Juan Gabriel, and La Vida Es un Carnaval by the legendary Celia Cruz!
What a wonderful way to celebrate the richness of Hispanic and Latino cultures while learning about the people, history, and traditions that have shaped our world!
A heartfelt thank you to our 3rd and 4th grade teachers for guiding our students and preparing such meaningful performances. And, of course, a big round of applause for our students, who sang their hearts out and made us all so proud!

Attendance Matters: Show Up and Shine!
Year-to-Date Attendance at Community
Our 3rd graders are shining brighter than ever, with 89% achieving Proficient/Advanced Attendance! LAUSD's goal is for every student to attend school at least 96% of the time. Thank you, families, for helping us build strong attendance habits and move closer to our school-wide goals!
Weekly Attendance Update
We have some encouraging attendance news to share! Our proficient attendance rate increased from 74.75% to 82.32% this week! That's 30 more students in the proficient attendance category! We also saw a significant decrease in the number of students in the basic attendance category, dropping from 62 to just 25.
However, our chronic absenteeism rate increased slightly from 9.60% to 11.36%. While we're excited about the improvement in proficient attendance, we still have work to do to ensure that all students attend school regularly.
Our goal is to keep proficient attendance above 80% while reducing chronic absenteeism to below 10%. Every day counts, and we appreciate our families' continued efforts to make school attendance a priority!

HOW TO OPT-IN TO CONNECT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
Here is the information on how to opt in to BBC messages if users accidentally opt out of messages. Opt-Out/Opt-In: Connect Notification System
The Connect system allows individuals receiving calls, emails or texts to Opt-Out from getting future communications.
- At the end of every call, Opt-Out instructions will be heard. The recipient can press the appropriate number to Opt-Out the phone number on which they are receiving the call. Alternatively, they can dial (855) 502-7867 to Opt-Out.
- This will impact receiving Outreach (general) messages and Blackboard Teacher Communication messages. It does not impact Attendance or Emergency calls sent by schools, local districts or central district offices. Attendance and Emergency calls directly impact the safety of students and staff and will continue to be delivered by the system.
- If an erroneous call is being made to a non-parent or non-employee, and they have already Opted-Out using the automated system, there is still the potential for them to receive Attendance and Emergency calls. To fully prevent calls from being made to this erroneous number, it must be corrected on the MiSiS Parent/Guardian Information screen for K-12 schools or the appropriate screen in EESIS and DACESIS for Early Education Centers and Adult schools, respectively. For employees, the correction must occur in the Employee Self-Service system (ess.lausd.net). Deleting the number directly from Connect will only be effective for 24 hours or until the next LAUSD data file is received by Finalsite.
- Parents and employees can choose to Opt back into receiving Outreach (general) messages by calling (855) 502-7867 for any phone number that was previously Opted-Out.
- Parents and employees can choose to Opt back in to receiving Text messages by texting "START LAUSD" to 91841.
- For opting emails back in, please contact the Mass Notification (formerly Blackboard) Office (see Contact Us).
- Teacher Communication messages will also include the same Opt-Out instructions.
- For every text and email message sent, the recipient will also be provided instructions on how to Opt-Out from receiving future messages.
