Message from Nicole Pease Message from Nicole Pease

Good afternoon DCS families, what a lovely week! The wonderful fall weather has made for lots of time spent outside. As many of you know, we begin our day outside where students have some time to move. We then line up and say the Pledge together and sing our school song or other songs. Deb Quinn has taught our students and staff how to use sign language as we sing our school song. We also share any announcements or birthdays. Beginning our day as a community strengthens the connection we have. In the classrooms, the day begins with Morning Meeting which is a part of the Responsive Classroom Approach. This includes a greeting, sharing, an activity, and a message. Through this process students practice social skills, while developing a trusting environment and setting a positive tone for the day. Over the years of beginning our day in these ways, we have seen a strengthening of our strong sense of community.

Additional ways we seek to develop community will be coming next week. On Friday, Jeannie Connolly will be at DCS and will guide our students in creating little peeps with a focus upon our motto "DCS Cares." These will be displayed in the lobby for all to see. In the afternoon we will enjoy a hike up the hill and a whole school kickball game.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, take care, Nicole

Library with Mrs. Donovan Library with Mrs. Donovan

Our first week of Library Specials is going well, and we’re all enjoying the time together!

We’ve been sharing read-aloud stories about books, reading, and libraries. We’ve learned some fun rhymes and songs for movement breaks. We’ll do a reading interest survey, so I can learn about what these young readers like. We’ll also do a scavenger hunt to help us find out about all the different kinds of books in our library, and where to find them. I’m happy to be with you all this year!

Kindergarteners are coming together as a class beautifully! They’ve learned all the routines and now we are jumping into academics. In math, students have explored a variety of math tools- pattern blocks, connecting cubes, geo-blocks and counters with 5 frames. In literacy, we’ve been exploring nursery rhymes, learned about the letters a, m and s- how to write the letters and what sound they make. Students are also practicing writing their names using the proper technique for writing lowercase letters. Rainbow Fish was our main selection this week and was used as part of our discussion about friendship and what it means to be a good friend. Many thanks to the Jones family for sharing swallowtail caterpillars with us. It’s been such fun watching the metamorphosis!

Mrs. Fletcher's Classroom Mrs. Fletcher's Classroom

First and second graders have been busy! We have enjoyed spreading beauty around our hallways with our "Get to Know You Flowers," which are hanging in our hallway. Take a walk down our hallway and get to know all the first and second graders better. We learned that one student wanted to be a pilot, while another one, a roller coaster operator! Our first Literacy unit is all about fables, and we learned that Aesop, who was from Greece, was the first to write them down. Ask your child to tell you what a fable is using hand motions: a short story, teaches a lesson, and uses personification. One of my favorite activities has been making puppets to go along with "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," and then having each student retell the story using as many vocabulary words as possible. Speaking of which, the students earn a pom pom for our vocabulary jar every time they use the word in a sentence or hear somebody else use the word. Our vocabulary jar is already almost FULL!! These students have bought in and are using new words each day.

We have touched on the events of September 11th by reading a few picture books that carefully teach about the helpers. One of my favorites is "Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey" by Maira Kalman, which talks about the restoration of the retired fireboat and the important role it played in putting out the fires in NYC after working 4 days around the clock. One of the students' favorites is "The Man in the Red Bandana" by Honor Crowther Fagan. Welles Crowther worked on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center and ended up saving countless lives that day. If you haven't read these books, check them out! You'll be reminded, as I am, of the dedication of our first responders as well as the impact that regular citizens can have as helpers! As a follow-up, we are working on thank yous to our local first responders. You are more than welcome to meander down our hallway and take a peek at what we've been doing!

3/4/5 Team - Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland 3/4/5 Team - Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland

We are so excited to be back in school, working and learning with this fantastic group of young people. For Social/Emotional Learning, both classes are reviewing the different Zones of Regulation through games and activities to develop further their independence in identifying and regulating their feelings. For Language Arts, the 3/4/5 team created beautiful painted journal covers. The students are learning about the various activities and centers that will be available in our ELA Centers.

During math time, the third graders are beginning our multiplication unit with a section on interpreting and representing data on a scaled graph. The fourth graders are focused on multiplication with the principles of area and prime numbers & composite numbers. At the same time, the fifth graders are learning about Volume. We are predicting a fun year filled with learning and growth for all!
