Boardman Lake Campus Update- From NMC President Nissley
Dear NMC partners and colleagues,
I’m writing to let you know that NMC and the Grand Traverse Band agreed to terms in principle for the sale of the Boardman Lake campus. Both parties have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to proceed, and I have suspended the RFP process begun in October, which led to the Band’s initial offer.
The LOI includes a leaseback period under which NMC will continue to occupy the building while new spaces are readied on the Front Street campus. The exact term of that leaseback period will be negotiated separately from the sale, but will be at least one year.
In January, we will hold a town hall meeting to answer further questions. At that time we will also know more about the timetable of the final sale. We understand that change can be difficult and unsettling. Please be assured that this decision by our Board of Trustees was made after careful consideration and only because we believe it is in the best long-term interests of our students and college.
I look forward to sharing more at the town hall. In the meantime, Happy New Year.
Nick
A Few Reminders as GHS navigates new ownership of the Boardman Lake Campus (BLC)
The following are a list of reminders to ease your minds as we transition from NMC to the Grand Traverse Band as owners of the BLC property.
1. Our current lease is through 2030, no matter who owns the property.
2. We have a legal option to extend our lease through 2035, if we wish.
3. GHS and the Grand Traverse Band have a good working relationship- they have donated more grant dollars to GHS than any other local community entity. We are honored to have the potential opportunity to work closer with the GT Band in the coming years.
4. GHS has secured a realtor to keep our options open, but if it remains affordable, we would prefer to remain at the BLC for the foreseeable future.
