Watch For and Act On Email from OPEROO / Forms & Flow

As everyone's days get busier, LaGuardia understands that we need to make things easier for families, students, and staff. This is why we are introducing OPEROO, soon to be called FORMS & FLOW, to handle much of paperwork collecting.

  • Families will receive a letter from Operoo with log in credentials. (413 families have already joined!)
  • Please create your account now. (It is best to have the account now rather than having to create the account in a time crunch.
  • All families will need this account.
  • This allows parents to sign forms digitally and return to school, including Open Lunch Consent form and Field Trip Permission Slips.
  • LaGuardia will not be using paper forms for students to bring home.

Grade 9 families have registration and school paperwork.

Grades 10-12 have school paperwork to complete.

Incoming Students should also receive their YondrPouches, Student IDs, and other items.

Students are Super Excited to See Each Other

We are excited that students are super excited for the beginning of school. While classes begin at 8:05 AM, students should be in line (9th and 10th along 65th St; 11th and 12th along Amsterdam Ave.) by 7:30 AM in order to enter the building and make it to their Period 1 class.

Those students who require extra time to embrace those who they last saw two months ago should plan additional time to get into the building.

Please move away from the streets to allow for more students to arrive at school.

Students should NEVER stop or stand in the street. Be mindful of the Bike Lane on Amsterdam as it is very active in the morning.

Students must arrive earlier than usual for the opening few days of school. This will allow us to get everyone into the building and to their first class. It will take several days before students arrival times become more distributed, and we get into our morning routines. In the mean time, we appreciate patience and support. A large amount of staff is in front of the school and in the lobby helping students enter smoothly and safely.

Last year, we did have some difficulty getting those who arrived a little bit before 8:00 AM into the building and to their first class. This lasted situation resolved itself after about 3-4 days. Students entering safely and students going to their classes is important to us. We will maintain a safe entry speed, even if that means it takes a little bit longer to get to class.

Other Bell Schedules

On Day 2, we will be following Special Bell Schedule so that all students can receive "This School Year" updates.

The following week's Bell Schedule is announced in each week's Yellow Sheet. We mostly operate on our Regular Bell Schedule.

Special Bell Schedules are used for Conference Days (Teacher Meetings) and Parent Teacher Conferences.

RE: NYCSA Accounts

We recognize that not all incoming families are receiving school emails yet. Our team is working diligently to assist families with setting up their NYCSA accounts and ensuring they are able to receive important school communications. If you do not have an account, Dr. Ballas will be reaching out to you with assistance. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this process over the next week.

When will schedules/student programs be available?

Given the complexity of the scheduling process, families should expect schedules to be visible in NYCSA and nycstudents.net accounts on Wednesday; we understand this is a source of stress, and the Program Office has been working extremely hard all summer to make sure the individual needs of our nearly 2400 students are met.

Incoming Students Locker Assignments

Incoming students received an email today, the 2nd, letting them know their locker assignments. The email was sent to their nycstudents.net Google accounts.

Please remember that parents can reset their child's email through their NYCSA Settings (gear wheel.)

Students who did not receive their email should go to Room 317 once school begins.

What school supplies do I need?

First day of school supplies should be limited to pencil/pen, notebook, and some looseleaf paper.

Our nearly 150 teachers and various studios all have different requirements, so it is hard to anticipate what supplies each student will need. It is best to wait until a student's teachers provides a specific list before purchasing. Please keep in mind that schedules may change the first 10 days of school, so delaying the purchase of very specific requirements should be held off until schedules are finalized.

Families who are in need of assistance with their supplies should contact Assistant Principal, Guidance, Ms. Roach, at sroach2@schools.nyc.gov

OMNY OMNY

NYC Public Schools provide our students with OMNY tap-to-go passes for subway and city buses. LaGuardia distributed OMNY cards on the first day of school. This will allow eligible students to get to and from school and school-related activities for free—and ride for free on weekends and all year, too! (The cards work through August if still enrolled in NYCPS.)

Getting help with Student OMNY Cards

Students who still need their OMNY Cards -- or need assistance -- should go to Room 230, Main Office.

About Student OMNY Cards

Student OMNY Cards are:

  • Distributed exclusively by your school. You can’t get a Student OMNY Card from the MTA.
  • Good for 4 free rides each day. You can tap a Student OMNY Card whenever you want to take up to 4 free trips every day of the week, any time of the day.
    • This includes a free transfer between the subway and local, limited, and Select Bus Service buses, or a free transfer between buses.
  • Valid all year long. Your Student OMNY Card doesn’t expire until the next school year.

If you’ve used Student MetroCards in the past, you should know that Student OMNY Cards give you more free rides with fewer limits. Student OMNY cards can be used:

  • All day (not just certain hours)
  • Every day of the year (not just school days)
  • Every day of the week (even on weekends and over the summer)
  • All year long (your OMNY card is valid for the entire school year and the summer)

Your Student OMNY Card is for you—and only you! Don’t share it and risk having your pass confiscated. Remember to always tap for your rides. Your tap tells the MTA how many people ride from every station and helps improve service.

Students Should Create Their Own PIN ASAP

PINs

By default, a PIN is not set for your account. You must create a PIN yourself. Your school does not have, or create, a PIN for you. There is no universal PIN for your school.

To create a PIN:

  1. Sign in to the Student Self-Service tool with your NYCPS username and password.
  2. Go to the left menu bar, and click on Pin Reset (this applies for creating a new PIN).
  3. Enter a PIN.
  4. Confirm your PIN by entering it again.
  5. Click on Save Changes.
  6. That’s it. An email will be sent to your NYCPS account to confirm you created a PIN.

Please note that PINs are optional for your NYCPS account. However, if you do not create a PIN, you will not be able to use the self-service tool to reset your password. If you feel like it would be hard to remember your PIN, or you are the parent of a young student, we recommend resetting your password through NYCSA.

Security Questions

Like a PIN, security questions are, by default, not set up. You must set them up.

To set up security questions:

  1. Sign in to the Student Self-Service tool with your NYCPS username and password.
  2. Go to the left menu bar, and click on Security Questions.
  3. Select and answer three questions of your choosing. Make sure you choose answers that you will remember.
  4. Enter your password.
  5. Click on Save Changes.
  6. That’s it. An email will be sent to your NYCPS account to confirm you set up security questions.

Resetting NYCPA Student Passwords Through NYCSA

You can reset your student's NYCPS Student Account password easily by following these instructions:

  1. Click on Settings (gear wheel)
  2. Click on Student Password.
  3. Select the child whose password you want to update.
  4. Enter a new password. Your password must:
    • Contain between 8–32 characters.
    • Contain at least one number (0–9).
    • Contain at least one lowercase letter (a–z).
    • Contain at least one uppercase letter (A–Z).
  5. Retype the new password.
  6. Click on Save.
  7. That’s it! The password has been reset.

Account Creation Codes for Parent NYCSA

Parents may be experiencing a delay in having their requests for an account creation code fulfilled. The NYCSA system will allow a code to be generated for parents/guardians provided certain required information has been recoded. We apologize for any delay in generating these codes. Access codes were generated, when possible, for all parents who does not have one. Families who did not receive a code require troubleshooting a few systems to identify the issue and communicate with families on how to resolve it. For example, parents during their child's initial enrollment period may have been identified as Other Relative instead of, more accurately, a mother or a father. Other Relatives do not have access to student's records, and this can be corrected by the family submitting a copy of a birth certificate. An account creation code can be generated once systems are updated with the correct information.

For assistance with accounts, please contact Parent Coordinator Dr. Tracy Ballas, at tballas@schools.nyc.gov

Our Cafeterias are Here to Serve You Our Cafeterias are Here to Serve You

Lunch Update

The Cafeterias on the 5th and 7th Floors will feel a little crowded these first two days of school. This situation is only temporary and will resolve itself soon. Once the Library opens, Open Lunch begins, students can access Practice Rooms in the basement, Open Studio in Fine Arts classrooms, and small group instruction at various places in the building, the cafeteria will have significantly fewer students each period.

Breakfast and Lunch Served Free to Everyone Daily

Students Receive Free Breakfast & Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are free for all NYCDOE students. Breakfast is served in the 5th Floor Cafeteria. A large number of students eat every day in our cafeterias. Granted, your child will always prefer your food, but no one has to go hungry.

Open Lunch Program For Grades 10, 11, and 12 (Begins September 19)

The first day students may leave the building for Open Lunch will be Thursday, the 18th. This will allow for processing all forms and updating the scan machines. If we are able to begin the program earlier – such as Thursday or Friday – we will let families and students know the day prior to students leaving the building.

Open Lunch Expectations

  • The digital Open Lunch Consent Form must submitted by the parent through Operoo/Forms and Flow
  • Students are expected to re-enter LaGuardia at least 5 minutes before the start of the following class period - remember to account for potential delays in re-entering the building.
  • Students are expected to arrive at their following class period on time.
  • Students are expected to swipe their ID card on the CAASS machine when exiting and returning to the building.
  • Students are expected to remain in the general neighborhood. Staying within a few blocks of LaGuardia will ensure a safe return to the building.
  • Students are expected to exercise sound judgment while off-campus, behaving respectfully in the neighborhood and representing LaGuardia positively.
  • Students understand that Open Lunch is a privilege that can be revoked if they do not follow the guidelines.
  • An Open Lunch Consent form must be on file in order for a student to leave the building for lunch during Blackout Days.

Once a student has left the building, LaGuardia staff cannot supervise the student's safety. If students have difficulty meeting Open Lunch expectations, they put themselves in unsafe situations. If a student does not meet the expectations of Open Lunch, Open Lunch is an unsafe option, and it will no longer be available to the student.

For assistance with the Open Lunch process, please see Dean Vogel in Room 229 or email jvogel4@schools.nyc.gov
