The Lion's Connection
Occtober 2025
From the Principal
Dear Abe Lincoln Families,
Happy Fall! The weather is changing and the trees are showcasing vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows. With the weather change comes cooler weather. Please make sure your student(s) have
the appropriate clothing (ie. jackets) and that names are written inside the garment to make it easier to return to their owners if lost.
Thank you to all who attended our Pastries with the Principals! I appreciated your questions
and collaboration around topics that improve the student experience. Our next Pastries with the
Principals will be on November 5th at 8:00 am in the Media Center. I hope to see you there!
On Thursday, October 9th, students will be participating in our annual Jog-A-Thon. This year we are creating extra excitement and have assigned colors to each of the grade levels. The PTO has added special prizes for classes that have the highest participation as well as those who show the most spirit! Please encourage your student to showcase their class color and come prepared in tennis shoes to log some laps!
In an effort to reduce the amount of tardies (we are averaging 25 per day), if we have NO tardies on Wednesdays, I will be dressing up in costume to greet students on Fridays! Students will need to be through the front doors by 7:55 AM. I appreciate all you do in getting students to school on time so they don't miss out on valuable learning.
Our assembly this month is being moved to October 24th to accommodate the busyness of Halloween/Harvest Parties. If you plan on attending, we have moved the entrance to the assembly to the south parking lot gym doors. You can sign in and grab a visitor pass prior to heading into the gym.
Mark your calendars! On October 29th from 4:30-6:30 PM, we are holding our first ever READ ACROSS ALE night! Your passport will include events such as flashlight reading, our Creation Station, book tasting at our Star-Books Cafe, a Game station, a Book Swap and more! We will also hold a read-aloud where staff will be dressed up to read from their favorite books. To accommodate our Book Swap, please send in any gently used children's books between October 13th - 24th. There will be a drop off table in the lobby. This is a great way to recycle your gently used books!
Halloween and Harvest Parties are nearing! Please make sure to check-out the specifics for each below.
I am excited to continue building a positive and productive school environment. Thank you for your continued support!
Warm regards,
Sandy Holman, Principal

Birthday Cupcake Celebration
๐ We celebrated our October birthdays in style this past Friday! Each month, our amazing PTO volunteers bring the fun (and the cupcakes!) to the cafeteria to make our birthday students feel extra special. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a sweet celebration! ๐ง๐
Attendance Matters!
Did you know that if your student misses 2 weeks (10 school days) per year, by the time they are in 12th grade, they will have missed more than 1/2 a school year or 130 class days. That's a lot of missed learning! We want to come alongside you to support student attendance which includes tardies.
Classes have the ability to earn rewards (extra recess, ice cream or pizza parties, and more) when they meet daily goals of 100% attendance. And if there are no tardies each Wednesday (through the front door by 7:55 AM), Mrs. Holman will dress up on Friday to greet students in the morning! Can we do it???
Pizza with the Principal
Our school theme this year is โChoices Matter.โ To encourage students making good choices, when they see another student make a good choice, they can fill out a Choices Matter Heart. We read the good choices during our morning announcements and then student is entered into a drawing to get Pizza with the Principal. Their hearts are put on our bulletin board with the hopes of filling the board with all the good choices our ALE community is making!
PAWSitive Rewards
We are changing the way we reward students for their PAWSitive tickets! Students earn these tickets from staff when they are caught making good choices. In the past, the tickets were placed into a drawing for VIP seating and/or a raffle for prizes.
We are moving towards creating experiences for students. Now they are able to save up their PAWSitives and can "buy" a reward below.
- Game Time
- Maker's Space (Make and Take projects)
- Extra Recess with a Friend
- Animal Shelter Project (students can "buy" items to help dogs at our local Humane Society - toys, food, treats, etc.; students will have their picture taken with the donation basket, meet one of the animals, and receive a certificate documenting their generosity).
On the third Thursday of each month, students will participate in the experience they chose to purchase with their tickets.
Halloween Costumes
October 31st, a Friday, is Halloween and students are invited to dress up. Please look from messaging from your student's teacher regarding what that will look like. Make sure costumes are following the costume guidelines:
- Costumes should be simple enough that students can get into them quickly and independently during the school day.
- Masks or facial coverings or facial make-up is not allowed.
- Costumes cannot include weapon-look-alikes or any other item not allowed at school.
Harvest Parties
Harvest parties will take place on October 31st towards the end of the school day. Some classes will have different times, so make sure to watch for communication from your student's teacher as to the specific time for their class. All food brought in must be store bought and all volunteers helping with parties MUST be approved as VIMs.
Walk and Roll Event
This Wednesday, students are invited to Walk and Roll to school! We are hoping to increase awareness for safety, most importantly wearing helmets when riding a bike or scooter. If your student participates, they should visit our celebration table at the front of the school! There will be SWAG they can grab before heading into the school! And those that roll (bike or scoot to school AND have worn a helmet) are invited to join Ms. Pauck on the track at the end of the day (prior to school ending) with their bikes and scooters!

AFTER SCHOOL CHANGE OF PLANS
Please communicate with the office and/or your student's teacher if you change plans for after school BEFORE 2:00 PM (by 12:30 on Wednesdays).
These timelines are so we can be sure your student gets notified in time.
Reunification
Safety and security are shared values in the Medford School District.
There are a variety of emergencies that can cause the need for a controlled release of students through a reunification process. Some reunifications may be for minor incidents and would take place at the school itself, such as police activity in the area or a weather event. Some reunifications are more major and would take place off site. We choose to be proactive, and believe that being prepared for one of these scenarios is critical.
What is Reunification?
Reunification is an organized controlled process that accurately reunites students with their parent or guardian. A well-planned reunification process increases safety and security through an orderly preplanned process.
What do I need to know?
The most helpful initial steps for you to know in a reunification situation are: Stay Home, Stay Informed, Be Ready.
Stay Home:
Staying away from the school site during an emergency is important so law enforcement and emergency responders can easily access the scene and respond to the situation. We know it is difficult to stay away from the school during an emergency, but we want the responders to be able to address the situation as easily as possible.
Stay Informed:
Monitor the MSD website for the latest information. Please make sure your studentโs information is up to date with your school, including your emergency contact information so we can keep you informed. You will receive notifications via email, text, and phone messages throughout an emergency.
Be Ready:
There are multiple sites where a reunification can take place. When the reunification location is announced, only essential guardians should come to pick up your child. Please be sure to bring a photo ID.
What is the Reunification Process?
Upon arrival at the Reunification Site, you will be greeted by a Greeter Team, where you will be given a reunification card to fill out for each student you are picking up. When the card is filled out, you will begin the 4 step process. Please do not attempt to take your student home before they have gone through the process.
- Check In - The reunification card will be checked and matched with photo ID.
- Verification - Confirmation of approved parent/guardian.
- Staging - Waiting area while the student is called to make ready for reunification.
- Reunify - When reunited with a student, a photo will be taken with the parent/guardian.
View our reunification video here!
We understand the urgency of wanting to reunite with your student(s). Reuniting you with your student safely is our goal as well. Please be patient with staff as they work through this important process.
The need for reunification after an incident is to regain accountability, provide support for students and families, and support law enforcement in a criminal investigation if needed.
Thank you for working with us to achieve the best possible outcomes during difficult situations.Ultimately, we all share the common goal of ensuring the health and safety of our most precious resource, your children.
Please No Toys at School
We would like to remind families of our No Toys at School policy. Toys can easily become broken, lost, or cause unnecessary distractions from learning. This includes items such as costumes (e.g., tails), LABUBUโs, cars, dolls, and similar items, unless pre-arranged with your childโs teacher for a special activity.
And remember, toys are also not allowed on the playground during recess. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a safe and focused learning environment for all students.
Spills and Stains
We are asking students who bring drinks into the school (such as from Starbucks, Dutch Bros, etc.) to please finish them at the table by the fish tank before heading to Morning Choices. We have had a few spills recently, and it can be very difficult to remove stains from the carpet.
Thank you for your support and understanding as we work to keep our school clean and welcoming for everyone!
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS AT ALE
Please do not send cupcakes or other birthday treats to school with your student. In order to make sure we maintain equity, we celebrate everyone at one time each month. Thank you for your understanding about this issue.
Every month, our PTO provides a special birthday cupcake celebration for all students with birthdays for the month. In May, we also celebrate June birthdays and in September, we celebrate July and August as well.
If your student has invitations for a birthday party, we ask that they are not handed out in class unless the whole class is invited.
Official MSD Volunteer Application
For student safety, all volunteers must complete an application and pass a background check. VIM status is valid for two years. For questions specifically about the Official MSD Volunteer Application, becoming a VIM (Volunteer in Medford), or checking your expiration date, please visit the ALE Office, call 541-842-3730, or email AbrahamLincoln@medford.k12.or.us.
Talented and Gifted Student Information
Medford District 549c schools are always in the process of identifying students who are academically talented and/or intellectually gifted. Previously identified TAG students remain identified and their services will continue as needed. Students may be nominated for the Talented and Gifted Program (TAG) by the following: national or state test scores, district achievement tests (i-Ready), a teacher, parents, community members, or by self-nomination. After nominations are complete, information will be gathered and a screening committee will screen each student. Students and parents/guardians will be contacted if additional testing is needed. If you wish to obtain information on this program or you have any questions, please contact Sarah Duvall, AP, at Abraham Lincoln Elementary at 541-842-3730, or Becky Sha, the district Talented and Gifted Specialist at 541-842-1043.
Publicity Denial 2025-26
Medford School District staff often take photos and videos of students during field trips, school events, sports activities, performances and during classroom instruction to share the work and accomplishments of students. Those accomplishments are shared through the district
website, social media, print publications, fliers, and brochures. The district also works with local news media to promote student work, as well as district projects and initiatives. If you do not want your studentโs image to be published, please visit your school office to fill out a Publicity Denial form. We will make every effort to protect the privacy of your students. Please note the district cannot guarantee a studentโs image will not be published if the student is photographed/videotaped in a large group or crowd setting, such as school assemblies, sports events, and public meetings. Please contact the Communications Department at msd.communications@medford.k12.or.us with any questions.
Free School Meals!
Both breakfast and lunch are offered at no charge to students for the upcoming school year. Your are welcome to send your student with a lunch as well.
Would you like to Substitute?
ALE regularly needs substitutes for classified & licensed positions, and we love to have parents as regular subs. You can choose your hours and the school(s) where you want to work. Check out ESS online.
