Parent Senate Opportunities
We’re looking for families who want to have a voice and play an active role in strengthening our school community!
We need Parent Senate Alternates for the 2026–2027 school year.
If you’re interested in representing families, sharing ideas, and helping support our school community, we’d love to have you join us as an alternate.
Looking ahead to 2027–2028…
We are also seeking 1 suburban parent/guardian and 1 Hartford parent/guardian to join our Parent Senate. Our current representatives are parents of seniors, so we want to begin preparing for a smooth transition and ensure continued family representation.
Parent Senate is a great opportunity to:
Share family perspectives and ideas
Help strengthen communication between families and the school
Support family engagement and school initiatives
Connect with other CREC Academy of International Studies families
Be an active voice in our Dragon community
If you are interested in serving as a 2026–2027 alternate or would like to be considered for a 2027–2028 Parent Senate position, please reach out to Ms. Gibson at sgibson@crec.org.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE DEN
¡Hasta luego, friends from Spain!
Today we said “hasta luego” to our exchange students from Spain after three amazing weeks at CREC AIS!
Our visitors became part of the Dragon community by shadowing students in similar grade levels and with shared interests. They attended classes, participated in schoolwork, and experienced our IB learning environment while building friendships and learning about student life in America.
Their experience also included exploring beyond the classroom — enjoying a Yard Goats game, visiting Boston and New York, attending concerts, and spending time with their community families and staff.
We’re grateful to everyone who helped make their experience so special.
First Day of Dragons United = SUCCESS! 💙
Dragons United is an inclusive program at the Academy of International Studies that brings students of all abilities together through sports, teamwork, friendship, and fun. It’s a place where everyone belongs, everyone contributes, and every Dragon gets a chance to shine!
We’re so excited for an amazing year of building friendships, celebrating one another, and showing what it truly means to be Dragons United! 💙
Monthly RECAP
We’re off to an amazing start to the new school year! Our Dragons have jumped right in, building relationships, settling into routines, and making the most of every opportunity to learn and connect.
With the new cell phone-free policy, we’re seeing a positive difference throughout our school community. Students are more engaged in class, participating in learning, and having meaningful conversations with friends in the hallways and during lunch. It’s been wonderful to see our students connecting with one another and being present in the moment.
We’re excited about the year ahead and all that our Dragons will accomplish. The energy is strong, the spark is lit, and we’re ready to soar!
Australia 2028
We’re thrilled to announce that our 2028 student trip is to Australia!

📚 Explore Our Library!
Our library offers a diverse collection of books and resources for students in grades 6–12, with materials that support a wide range of reading levels, interests, perspectives, and lived experiences.
Students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to make informed choices about reading materials based on individual interests, maturity, and readiness for certain content. Students can also speak with our Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Jennifer Tierney, with questions about books or reading levels.
Families are welcome to explore the collection together and discuss books and their themes. You can search the library collection by scanning the QR code or visiting the Academics → Library section of our school website.
If you would like to discuss your student’s ability to independently select reading materials, please reach out to Mrs. Tierney.
Thank you for partnering with us to foster a positive and independent reading experience for all students!

📢 IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS
We are off to a great start! Here are a few reminders to keep the year fantastic.
After-School Expectations
Please note that there is no after-school care available. Students who are not participating in a school-sponsored sport or supervised after-school activity must leave campus immediately following dismissal. Students may not remain on school grounds without adult supervision. Middle School students are not allowed to attend sporting events without an adult in attendance.
📵 Cell Phone-Free Community
Students are not permitted to use or have cell phones out during the school day. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this expectation, which helps create a focused and engaging learning environment for all students.
Early Dismissal
If you need to sign your child out of school early, please contact the Main Office or email AISAttendance@crec.org with your request.
To help us maintain a safe and smooth dismissal process, please keep the following in mind:
Students will be called out of class once an authorized adult has arrived at the school.
All students must be signed out by an authorized adult before leaving the building.
Students are not permitted to leave the school building on their own. Students who need to leave and drive, will have to get admin approval.
Early dismissals must take place by 1:30 PM. Students will not be released from the building after 1:30 PM. If you arrive to pick up your child after 1:30 PM, you will need to wait until our regular dismissal time at 2:05 PM.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together to keep our Dragons safe and ensure a smooth end to each school day!
Parking & Fire Lane
When visiting the building, please do not park at the front entrance. This area is designated as a fire lane and cars cannot be parked there.
For visitors coming into the building, designated visitor parking spaces are available in the left parking lot, accessible from the Blue Hills Avenue Extension entrance.
We appreciate your help in keeping emergency access clear and making arrival and dismissal safe and organized for everyone.

IB Learner Trait of the Month
In September, our IB Learner Profile trait is Inquirer. Inquirers “nurture curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. They know how to learn independently and with others. They learn with enthusiasm and sustain their love of learning throughout life.”
Here are suggestions for how you can encourage your student to be an inquirer. Enjoy!
Ask your student about what they are doing in their classes that makes them think.
Ask your student what they are curious about (and why!), and share your wonders with them.
Talk through your “inquiry process” as you figure something out, so that your student can “see” inquiry skills in action in the real world.
Share what you love to learn about, and how you continue to learn, with your student.
Encourage your student to become more independent through things like emailing teachers themselves, completing their homework, and organizing their materials for school.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Attendance Matters: Every Day Counts!
A strong school year starts with showing up—and it continues with being present every day. Regular attendance helps students stay engaged, keep up with their learning, build meaningful relationships, and make the most of their experience at CREC Academy of International Studies.
Now that we are well into the school year, we encourage families to make daily attendance a priority. Every school day is an opportunity to learn, connect, participate, and grow.
Let’s work together to keep our Dragons engaged, connected, and on track for a successful school year. Every day matters. Every student matters.
Excused absences may include:
- Student illness or medical appointments (with appropriate documentation when required)
- Family emergencies
- Religious observances
- Other absences approved by the school in accordance with attendance policies
Unexcused absences may include:
- Vacations or trips taken during the school year
- Staying home for non-medical reasons
- Oversleeping
- Other absences that are not approved by the school
If you need support and resources during the summer, please contact Ms. Gibson at sgibson@crec.org
DRAGON Athletics
🏅 Join a Sport. Build More Than Skills. 🏅
Being part of a school sport is about more than wins and losses—it’s about growth, discipline, and connection. Whether you’re stepping onto the field, court, or track, athletics help students develop skills that last a lifetime.
Benefits of joining sports:
✔ Builds teamwork and leadership
✔ Improves physical and mental health
✔ Strengthens time management and discipline
✔ Creates friendships and school pride
✔ Boosts confidence and resilience
At CREC Academy of International Studies, sports are another way our Dragons learn to push limits, support one another, and represent our community with pride.
Get involved, and be part of something bigger. Your team is waiting!
