Hello Woodstock Family!

It is a short but busy week and we are thankful to spend it with this amazing community.

On Wednesday morning, join students from around the world as they walk and roll to school for International Walk & Roll to School Day. Too far to walk or bike? Park the car a few blocks away! More details below. 🚲

It is hard to believe but the Harvest Carnival is quickly approaching and we need your help to make it great! This event relies on our community to make the magic happen. There are many ways to get involved - from donating items, putting your crafting skills to use on the Haunted House, running an activity, cleaning up, and more. See below for how you can get involved. ✨

We hope you have a restful three day weekend and will join us for our first General PTA Meeting on the year on Monday. Join us on Zoom or in the library at 7 pm. See you there! 🦁

PPS Has Released Proposed School Closure Scenarios

Portland Public Schools released two proposed "rightsizing" scenarios Monday evening, ahead of Tuesday's Board of Education meeting: Scenario A would close 14 schools; Scenario B would close 11. Both scenarios keep dual language immersion programs running, but relocate or combine them at different sites. Woodstock is not proposed for closure or boundary changes under either scenario, though under both, Woodstock would receive the Mandarin Immersion program currently at Clark Elementary.

A third option — keeping all schools open with no boundary changes — is also on the table. Under this scenario, enrollment continues to decline, and no programs move, including the proposed Mandarin transition from Clark to Woodstock. By the district's own projections, this option would leave only 48% of students in a school at sustainable size, compared to 73–80% under the other two scenarios.

These are proposals, not final decisions — the Board is expected to review community input before a formal recommendation and vote.

Join or organize a community preparedness pod

Pods are made up of neighbors from two or more nearby households with a shared interest in helping each other during emergencies. Pods help build neighborhood relationships, expand social connections, and share emergency prep skills.

Woodstock Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) is hosting a community workshop on October 11, open to all interested neighbors:

Neighborhood Pod Starter Kit

Sunday October 11, 12:30 - 2:30 PM
Woodstock Library community room
6008 SE 49th Ave.

Most of our NET training covers disaster response — this workshop covers the community organizing skills to build strong neighborhood ties before disaster hits. Practice the 1:1 conversations and first-meeting basics that turn interested neighbors into a community preparedness pod, and leave with a starter kit of tools, a plan for your first outreach, and a group to check in with along the way.

IMAGINE A GREENER WOODSTOCK!

If you’d like to help Woodstock become healthier and greener, read on! The Eco-School Network’s free four-session training prepares you to carry out a passion project that meets a need at your school while helping kids practice sustainability. Projects include school gardens, food waste composting, recycling/reuse collections, student green teams, and other initiatives.

Want to learn more? Join an online info session on October 9 at noon. To RSVP, email hannah@ecoschool.org.

What is the Eco-School Network? We are a local network of parents and school staff shaping greener, healthier schools by leading projects for students. After the training, you can join our network of changemakers from other schools to see what’s possible. Training and ongoing support are free for parents and schools. Here’s a short video about our work.
