Haynes Monthly
November
Dear Haynes Families,
It's hard to believe that we are already more than a quarter of the way through the school year! Ms. Whitehead, our Math Coach, updates a math bulletin board with all of the different ways to represent the school days throughout the year. Last Friday, I noticed that we were already on Day 45!
As the leaves changed colors and began to fall, we used it as an opportunity to make something beautiful. Students were given a Fall STEAM Challenge to work together to build and create Land Art using the materials that they found outside. Students could use various strategies such as experimenting with color, light and shadows, negative space, finding patterns, and overlay. Below are some pictures of the artwork, students did an amazing job!
This past month, we have started our Haynes Safety Patrol where fifth grade students take on leadership positions throughout the school day. Each morning, there are Safety Patrol members at entry doors greeting students as they enter. For recess, students put out and pack away recess games. There are bus monitors that help walk our kindergartners as well as direct all students to buses safely. We also have a couple of students in charge of raising, lowering, and folding the American flag each day. Ms. Haney's class has our Safety Patrol duties right now and they will rotate to the other 5th grade classes throughout the year.
Also, I'd like to thank Mr. Miller, our crossing guard who also helps to put together our planter boxes in the front of the building to make our school look beautiful and welcoming!
Best,
Bryant Amitrano

Attendance
Regular school attendance is essential for continuity and academic progress. As the SPS Parent Handbook indicates, absences due to student illness, religious observance, legal proceedings, and family emergencies are authorized absences. Absences for other reasons should be avoided. Parents who take their children out of school for vacation assume responsibility for their children's educational program. Teachers cannot be expected to provide work in place of missed instruction.
Whenever a student anticipates absence or tardiness, a parent/guardian should notify the school by using the Google Form (link below). Without this information or previous notice, the school staff will call a parent to confirm a child’s absence. We work as a staff to confirm the safety of all students at Josiah Haynes every day.
Attendance/Tardy Letters
Attendance letters will be sent home for students that have more than 5 unexcused absences or tardies and meetings will be requested for students that have 10+ absences from school. A change in SPS policy this year, Attendance Letters will be sent to students with 10+ absences regardless of them being excused or unexcused. Our hope is to work together with families to ensure that all of our students are in school regularly. Each student absence or tardy will be coded as excused or unexcused.
An excused absence includes:
- Documented illness or injury
- Bereavement/family funeral
- Major religious observances
- Extraordinary family circumstances
An unexcused absence includes, but is not limited to:
- Chronic absences or tardies without medical documentation
- Truancy
- Non-emergency family situations
- Family vacations
In Massachusetts, Chronic absenteeism is defined as the percentage of students missing 10 percent or more of their days in membership. In a typical 180-day school year, this is the percentage of students who miss 18 or more days. The chronic absenteeism rate includes both excused and unexcused absences and is calculated for students in grades 1 through 12.
Basketball Courts
I wanted to provide you with an update on the basketball courts since the money raised from last year's Fun Run was allocated towards updates. I have met with HOP and we are working on having two of the backboards replaced and then another basketball hoop to be installed on the playground. We had the current hoops inspected and we found that the poles are in good shape, but the backboards are not, so we are able to replace two of them.
One of the areas that we wanted to improve upon was accessibility, since the current hoops are all set at 10 feet which is not accessible to many of our students. Unfortunately, the current hoops cannot be lowered and tearing up the group and installing new poles would be a larger scale project. We decided to have an additional hoop installed on the playground that can be lowered for students and make it more accessible for them. We hope this work will be completed soon!
Nurse Jackman Update
The halls of Haynes are ringing with a chorus of coughs.
There are many types of coughs, and not all mean you have to miss school. Please keep your student home if their cough is uncontrolled, would be distracting to the class, prevents them from participating fully in the school day, or is accompanied by other severe symptoms. Coughing is also a COVID symptom that should be tested for.
Cough drops are considered medication and should not be sent with students. Any cough medication should be administered at home prior to school, unless it is part of your student’s asthma care plan. With lingering mild coughs, remind your student to cough into elbows, wash hands, and drink water. Children’s Hospital has a great information page about coughs HERE.
Email Nurse Jackman with any questions or concerns Corinne_Jackman@sudbury.k12.ma.us
Haynes Operational Reminders
Please do not hold the door open for others to enter our building. (We prefer to think of this as a safety measure - not being rude).
All visitors: Please press the door buzzer and a front office team member will ask you to identify yourself and to state the reason for your visit.
Thank you
