Our Busy Week Our Busy Week

MATH: In Math this week, we wrapped up our coin unit in a fun way by using our counting skills to pay for ice cream at the ice cream truck! Students practiced identifying coins and counting money in a real-life situation, which made it really exciting. During Number Corner, we also introduced length, weight, capacity, and temperature, along with the tools we use to measure each one.

PHONICS: In Phonics, we introduced consonant digraphs. Digraphs are two letters that make one sound (sh, ch, th, wh, and ph). We also started learning when to use c, k, and ck. Students are learning that we use ck at the end of a one-syllable word after a short vowel (like duck, sock, and back). We use k at the beginning of a word or before vowels like e, i, or y (like kite, kid, and key). We usually use c at the beginning of a word before a, o, or u (like cat, cot, and cup), and at the end of longer words (2 or more syllables), especially in words that end in -ic (like music and fantastic).

WRITING: To introduce our new opinion writing unit, we read the book Duck! Rabbit! and had a fun discussion about whether the character was a duck or a rabbit. We voted and shared our opinions, and learned that everyone can have their own opinion and there is no right or wrong answer. We also talked about the difference between a fact and an opinion, and learned that opinions are things we think, feel, or believe. Students learned the sight word 'because' and how to give 2–3 reasons to support their opinions. Some of our writing prompts will include favorite things like color, book, or place, as well as fun choices like snakes or spiders, playing outside or reading a book, and camping or staying in a hotel.

SCIENCE: In Science this week we began our Science weather unit. We learned about extreme or severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornados, hurricanes, blizzards and floods. We also focused on how we can prepare for emergency weather situations. We learned that severe weather is weather that doesn't happen very often, and is the kind of weather where it is safest for us to stay INSIDE. With this we also talked a lot about emergency preparedness. We talked about what we should have in our homes to help us. We highly encourage you to talk about the ways that your house is prepared for an emergency situation, show your child where items are, consider making a go bag with them, etc. Below I have linked a website that gives suggestions for what to pack in an emergency backpack. We did a pre-assessment where students circled items they thought would be helpful and then we talked through them. We also packed our own emergency backpack. Students were given a handful of items like sleeping bags, water, food, toys, batteries, etc. They had to decide which items they thought they would need for their own backpacks. To go along with our weather learning, students also became engineers by building paper houses and using different materials to make them stronger. We designed and tested our houses to prepare for a “hurricane” (Ms. D’s fan!) and worked to see if they could withstand the windstorm. Students had so much fun testing, improving, and learning through hands-on exploration!

We will continue to talk about weather next week, but our focus will be on more standard weather like sunny, snowy, rainy and the tools we use to measure them.

On Wednesday, Kool Kidz Ice Cream came to help our kindergarten students practice their coin counting skills! Unfortunately, it started raining in the middle of purchasing our ice cream, so we had to hurry to get back inside. Instead of enjoying our treats at the park, we headed back to the classroom and watched a weather episode of The Magic School Bus while we ate our yummy treat! This also means I didn't get as many pictures or our traditional group photo in front of the ice cream truck. We still had a great time!

Kindergarten will be going to the Woodland Park Zoo on Wednesday May 20th! We will need volunteers to join us (the school will only be paying for 2 volunteers for each class but we would LOVE to have more volunteers if possible so if you can join us and pay your own way or already have a zoo membership, please let us know. The zoo has strict guidelines for student-to-chaperone ratios, so we will need at least 2 volunteers for our class (3–4 is preferred). Please let me know if you are available to chaperone the last field trip of the year!

Hygiene Drive Hygiene Drive

On Campus Counselor On Campus Counselor

We have a wonderful mental health resource available to Brighton students! Hailee Schifferl, a licensed counselor from Wickler Behavior, will be on campus supporting teachers and classrooms in SEL practices and classroom routines for the next few weeks. She will also be available for 1:1 consultation with you or your child to see if counseling is a good option for your child. If you're interested in having your child meet with her for an on-campus consultation, please let your teacher know or email Megan at megan.wehrly@brightonschool.com for more information.

Attendance Policy and Reminders Attendance Policy and Reminders

As we start the second semester, I wanted to share some quick reminders about attendance. You will find your child's absences listed on their report cards. Consistent attendance in elementary school builds a strong academic base, enhances social skills, and fosters responsibility. Missing school regularly affects reading, writing, and math progress.

Our room opens at 8:15 and we hope that all students are in by 8:45am at the absolute latest, but prefer by 8:30 so that we can start the day together.

  • The Brighton attendance policy is listed in the Family Handbook, there is also a link to it below.
    • Absence Limit:
      • Students may not exceed 15 total absences per school year.
      • More than 5 unexcused absences triggers intervention.
    • Next Steps if Absence Limit Is Exceeded:
      • Notification Letter sent to parents at 5 absences.
      • Mandatory Parent Conference with teacher and administration at 8 absences.
  • Please send a quick email if your child is going to be in late or not at school for the day. You can always reply to the SMORE and it'll send an email directly to me. It helps us to know who's coming for the day.
  • If you are dropping your child off late, please make sure you are walking them up to the classroom and that they are with an adult when you leave them. We have morning specialists, recess, assemblies, etc. and there are times where we aren't in the classroom after 8:45. If you cannot find us, please walk up to the front desk and they will help connect your child with our class.

We appreciate you partnering with us! If you have any questions, please let us know.

Family Handbook and Resources

Reminders: Reminders:

*Now that Spring is here, that means the weather can't choose between rain or sun! Please make sure the students are prepared for any type of weather and temperature. Having both warm and light weight jackets as options is always helpful for them to decide what they need in the moment. Waterproof jackets, Rainboots, and umbrellas are also good ideas!

*Please make sure to send a rain jacket everyday. We go outside rain or shine and if students do not have a proper rain jacket with a hood, they continue their day sopping wet. You may leave a rain jacket and boots in your child's cubby if that is more convenient for you. Washington weather is so unpredictable so its always a good idea to send a rain jacket just in case. Also please LABEL all outerwear with your child's first and last name. This helps the teachers find the owner quicker.

*Please keep your child’s Go Home folder (from the supply list) in their backpack at all times. We will use it to send home classwork and important flyers daily, especially on Fridays. Please check the folder each day and remove papers so it does not get too full. You can also use the folder to send paperwork back to school; just let me know so I know to look for it.

*Kindergarten is a big jump from PreK. Students are working on so many self-help skills. One of these is carrying their own items such as their backpacks, lunch pails, and folders. Please make sure students have lunchpails and folders that can fit in or attach to their backpacks. Being able to carry their own materials is a huge confidence boost!

* If you have not sent your child's emergency kit, family picture, emergency release form, or spare clothes, please send those in on Monday. Please also fill out the parent questionnaire below if you haven't yet.

* We politely request that all toys and stuffies stay at home, unless they are requested for a special day. This helps limit distractions while also making sure that items don't get lost or broken. Thank you for helping in this effort.

*Every Wednesday our day begins with Music at 8:30 AM. To help the children start off calm and ready, it is very helpful if they can arrive about five minutes early. This gives us a chance to settle in together before heading to Music class. If you arrive late on Wednesdays, please bring your child directly to the Music room in the morning.

*Our classroom door opens at 8:15 AM. If you arrive earlier than that, your child will need to be accompanied by an adult or signed up for Morning Care. For safety reasons, students may not wait in the hallway unattended. Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and smooth start to the day!

Important Tips: Important Tips:

  • Please bring a light sweater (along with their outside jacket) for your student to wear in the classroom in case the a/c is too chilly for them.
  • Please bring a water bottle everyday. (labeled with their name)
  • Please pack 2 snacks and a lunch that your student can easily open on their own. (Bring a 3rd snack if your student is in Extended Care)
  • Please bring a change of clothes including bottoms, shirt, underwear, and socks in a zip lock bag labelled with their name. This should remain in their backpacks or cubby and replenished as used every day.
  • Label ALL personal items with their name including clothing items.

Sick Policy Sick Policy

General Illness Policy:

If a child becomes ill during the day, they will stay in a separate area while awaiting pickup. Students are required to be picked up within 60 minutes.

  • Students may return to school after they have been fever/fever reducing medication free and/or symptom free for 24 hours, whichever is longer.
  • The presence of any symptoms below generally suggests a student has an infectious illness and should not attend school, regardless of whether or not the illness is COVID-19.

Symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 or higher)
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • New onset of severe headache (especially with fever)
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose (mucus is green/yellow)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea (defined as 2 or more loose stools in a 24 hour period)

If your child DOES have any of the symptoms above:

  • Keep your child home
  • Consider getting your child tested for COVID-19
    • **If positive for COVID, your student must stay home 5 days from onset of symptoms. They may return on Day #6 if symptoms are gone (or significantly better). They are encouraged to wear a mask through Day #10.
  • Contact your teacher via email and Brighton School (425-640-7067) to report that your child is sick. We may ask additional questions to determine when it is safe for your child to return to school.

On Thursday, April 16th we had our Annual PTO Fun Run Kick-off Assembly. This year we are having a COLOR RUN and we are excited to get our students & families involved in this important fundraiser for our PTO!

Click HERE to learn how to register your student! The Fun Run event will be on Monday, May 11th.

Neighborhood/Driving Reminder:

Friendly Reminder for Parents: To help keep our students and families safe, please follow these important school zone guidelines:

  • This is a school zone — please drive slowly and stay alert for children and families at all times.
  • To keep all of us safe, please remember that there are no U-turns allowed in the street. Please use our parking lot or go all the way to the end of the cul-de-sac to turn around.
  • Please do not park in the Handicap spaces unless you have a handicap permit. We want to leave this open for our families who need this accommodation.
  • Do not use the left side of the street to bypass the drive thru line - please wait in line (it moves quickly!).

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe!

Hygiene Kits for Washington Kids in Transition:

We are going to be creating hygiene kits for Washington Kids in Transition. We'd love trial size versions of hygiene supplies for unhoused students so they are easy to carry and could live in a school bag without shame if needed.

Our family groups will be assembling kits similar to these, plus whole-body wipes, small kleenex packs, small bars of soap, small Q-tip packs, etc.

We'd like to be collecting things through April 24 & donations can be dropped of in your student's classrooms.

Coffee & Conversations 4/15:

On Wednesday, April 15th, we had our Coffee and Conversations hosted by Margot Schroeder, our school counselor. She shared insights into what anxiety looks like in students, when it becomes a problem, and what parents can do to support their students. Please use the link to view the video as well as the attachments for the slide deck and handouts.
