From the Principal's Desk

It's already June and everyone is enjoying a much deserved and certainly earned summer break. As you think about trips and plans for the summer months, please remember to keep our children reading all summer. Reading with and to your child is also great for ensuring all of the work they did this school year isn't lost to the dreaded "Summer Slide". Our 2020-2021 school year was definitely unique and challenging, but we are all looking forward to the amazingness in store for our 2021-2022 school year!

To ensure our next school year is the best it can possibly be, I'd like to invite all families to join me for a virtual meet up. Please remember that we are, "Better Together".

The elementary office will be closed during the month of July, but if you need anything, you can always email and I will get back with you ASAP, jvislosky@marletteschools.org.

Thank you for sharing your most precious resource with us!

Report cards will be mailed on June 18. Let us know if you don't receive it by June 25.

Coffee & Conversation

Please join me on Thursday, June 24, to discuss the challenges of this school year and the opportunities that await us in the next school year. Join me in the morning, evening, or both! I look forward to hearing about this school year from your perspective as well as sharing what we have in store for next year.

Summer Slide

You've heard all about summer slide and know that when students are not in school over the summer, they tend to fall backwards academically. Over time, these slips can turn into a landslide and put children a couple of years behind their peers. Students certainly deserve a break after working hard throughout the school year, but they shouldn't take the entire summer off. Children don't need an expensive personal tutor or software program to keep them up to speed, they just need to read! Please check out these resources and don't forget to swing by the Marlette District Library this summer!

Article of the Month

This article is from the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Every year before summer break begins, you will hear educators talking about "summer slide". This refers to students losing ground over the summer due to a lack of academic engagement. It doesn't take much to help students maintain or even gain some ground academically over the summer months. Ask them to add up the items when you grocery shop, read the newspaper aloud, or turn on closed captioning during their favorite show.

We know that our students earned their summer vacation this year and they deserve a break, but devoting 30 minutes a day to reading will make sure they maintain the skills they worked so hard for this year.
