Counselor Newsletter for March

Hello parents!
Another month has zoomed by and we are already in March! Below is some information and some resources for our wonderful Pyle families:
In the month of January, our counselors....
- performed 9 restorative circles/conflict mediations,
- held 16 small social-emotional learning group sessions,
- held 22 individual counseling sessions,
- performed 56 check-ins with or observations of students,
- performed 23 consultations with teachers on how to best support students in class,
- presented classroom lessons to 6 classrooms,
- and offered 3 lunch bunch activities during the students' lunch recess times.
Social Emotional Learning Topic of the Month
Our theme for this month's social emotional learning topic is Problem Solving. Children develop problem-solving skills at different rates; nevertheless, it is imperative that children learn to tackle problems with grit and creativity, especially as they learn to cope with setbacks or resolve conflict. Moreover, problem solving is one of the most important skills children can develop, because it prepares them to face increasingly complex academic and interpersonal issues as they mature.
Here are some articles and videos to help you understand the benefits of teaching and role-modeling Problem Solving in your home and community:
PAWS Expectations of the Month
At Ernie Pyle, we follow the acronym PAWS:
P: Be Proactive.
A: Act Respectfully and Responsibly.
W: Make Wise Choices.
S: Be Safe.
In March, we are focusing on Making Wise Choices. Some examples of what this looks like is throwing away our trash in the trash can, being aware of our surroundings while in the hallway, and following directions.
