Weekly Update
April 4, 2025

Parents,
The St. Louis County Public Libraries now have a new resource available called: Gateway to Reading Literacy Kits. The kits are designed to help students learn to read. They can provide extra support for both younger and older children. Each kit builds on key reading skills, helping students become confident readers by focusing on how letters and sounds work together.
The kits offer a step-by-step approach, moving from simple words to more challenging reading skills. Every kit includes decodable books. Books that are carefully written so that students can sound out most of the words based on the reading kills they've learned so far. Each literacy kit also includes a simple activity guide that shows parents and educators how to use the kit effectively.
The guide offers:
- A quick overview of the skills covered in each kit
- Step-by-Step Instructions on how to practice the skills using the books in the kit.
- Fun Tips and Tricks for keeping students engaged.
- Extra practice ideas
Just a reminder...we do not have school on Tuesday, April 8.
We hope you have a great weekend!

Hat Day
Next Friday, April 11th, we are hosting Wear Your Favorite "HAT DAY" to raise money for Oak Brook's Little Free Library, which one of our families has been working on for its service learning project. One of our Oak Brook families is helping support this project through our PTO auction. We are using funds raised on this day to supplement the money raised through the auction.

Patience
Patience may be one of the most difficult things to teach kids because we, as adults, don't always do a good job demonstrating patience. In our experience, this is one of the skills where kids really do as we do not as we say. Some ways to help teach patience to kids include:
- Participate in activities together that require you to take turns. Whether this is playing a game or waiting in line at the park, demonstrating patience and talking with your child about them is one way to help develop patience.
- Cooking and baking is another great way to teach patience. Food is not created instantly so making a recipe from scratch is a great way to teach patience.
- Jigsaw puzzles are also another way to teach patience. They may be frustrating at first, but as you work together and you model patience, your child may begin to develop patience (and problem solving skills).
- Gardening is another great way and can teach kids responsibility by having them weed the garden and water/fertilize it as needed.
Teaching patience is not easy because we often don't demonstrate patience as best we can (at least we know that is the case with us). The more opportunities students have to demonstrate patience they better they will get at it. Showing patience also ties into our core value of self-control when kids learn to wait without getting upset and acting out in ways they normally wouldn't.
