Your Monthly Landowner Update Your Monthly Landowner Update

May 2026

May is here, and with it comes the launch of MIFarmLink’s Landowner Newsletter. This monthly update is built for you! We'll share farm seekers, useful resources, and stories from across Michigan, shaped by what landowners truly need and strengthened through our partnerships.

As planting gets underway, it’s a reminder of how much possibility this time of year holds. With the land coming back to life, it feels like the right moment to start something new. We hope this becomes a tool you can rely on all season long.

We are a family of four in Grand Rapids, MI, exploring a transition to partial farm income within the next 5–10 years. On our 1/10 acre city plot, we currently manage beehives, fruit trees, vegetables, native plants, and plan to add laying hens in 2026. Our long-term vision is a regenerative, diversified farm rooted in permaculture, community education, and applied research. We bring strong research and business skills and are interested in gradual, values-aligned land transitions.

I am looking for pasture to lease to raise broilers. They will be fed organic feed, and kept in pens that are moved daily onto fresh pasture. I need a minimum 1/2 acre, access to electricity and water. Ideally the property would also have a shed/barn/garage where I could brood the chicks. Last year I raised 60 Cornish cross broilers successfully on leased land. For next summer I'm looking for something closer to home (northeast Oakland County).

Farm Transfer Toolkit

The Farm Transfer Toolkit is a practical, print-friendly resource designed to guide agricultural landowners through the process of passing on their land, their operation, or both to the next generation. It brings together key steps, worksheets, and planning tools to help users clarify goals, evaluate finances, and navigate important conversations with family members and professionals. Developed by American Farmland Trust for its Land Transfer Navigators program, with support from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, this toolkit offers a steady, thoughtful approach to one of the most important decisions a landowner can make.

It allows farmers and producers to list what they have available, while making it easy for customers to find fresh products nearby. For those looking to support local agriculture or expand their reach, Farmish offers a straightforward way to build connections, strengthen local food systems, and keep business close to home.
