Special Area Spotlight!
We will spotlight a special area class each week to share the amazing things that are happening in Art, Explorations, Library, Music, P.E., and Wellness classes.
What are students exploring in Wellness class with Mrs. Long?
In Wellness all grades have been working on feelings and identifying or predicting feelings. We can all feel a variety of emotions throughout one day. We also discussed that our emotions are valid and all people feel ALL emotions at one time or another. It’s part of being human.
In Kindergarten, the students were talking about all the different emotions that they know. They were “feelings detectives” and tried to look for clues to identify how someone else might be feeling based on their body language and facial expressions. They were introduced to our “Feelings Game.” Students are given an emotion that they can feel, then they move around the room, showing what that emotion looks like. They must “freeze” when they hear a signal and wait for the next emotion to be called out.
In First Grade, students spent time identifying their own feelings---this can help us to make friends, get along with others, and help us calm down when we need to manage our emotions. Students practiced showing their classmates how their expression would change by feeling different emotions. They had fun surprising each other with their different facial expressions.
In Second grade, students worked on predicting how others might be feeling in a given situation. Second graders were “Feeling Detectives.” They looked for clues on their classmates' expressions and body language to guess what emotion they might be feeling.
In Third Grade the students worked on understanding how people can have different feelings about the same situation. Students worked with a partner and talked about how they might feel in different situations, such as going on a roller coaster, trying a new vegetable or even walking by a big dog in their neighborhood. They realized that not all students felt the same way in each situation and that is completely okay. In Fourth grade, we discussed how you can feel multiple emotions in the same situation.
Fourth graders interviewed their classmates to find out how they all felt about different things. They found that many people felt differently about different things and that’s okay. We used the example of riding a roller coaster for the first time. Some students were excited, some students were nervous and some weren't sure. It all depended on different factors like their personality or their past experiences.
The Fifth Graders worked on how predicting others' feelings can help us understand how they might react to a certain situation. Fifth graders worked with a partner and interviewed them on some of their personality traits and how they like to do things. For example, do they like to work alone or with a partner, are they outgoing or more reserved, etc. They used this information to make a prediction on how they might feel in different situations. Then they compared their feelings with their partner. By making predictions on how someone might feel, it can help us get along better with our friends and try to prevent problems while working with others.
