Stay tuned for more pictures from the event. This afternoon we had our 2nd Marking Period Honor Roll ceremony honoring the hard work and dedication of our students. Classroom Spotlight: Close Reading and Writing in ELA Classroom Spotlight: Close Reading and Writing in ELA

Close Reading

Our ELA classes have been spending the month of March engaging in the close reading of short texts from a variety of genres. Our students are deepening their close reading skills by analyzing texts through a variety of literary lenses. Students engage in multiple reads of a text while questioning, clarifying, summarizing and predicting based on the specific literary lens they are using in class. During this time, students will compare and contrast two or more short texts to make larger connections between the literature that they are reading in class and larger themes that they are seeing in the world around them.

Evidence Based Writing

Our students regularly practice writing evidence based written responses in all of their classes. Students learn how to develop strong, text based claims about the literature that they are reading. Students analyze these texts to look for strong, impactful evidence that they can use to develop and support their claims. Our ELA teachers guide students through careful analysis of this text based evidence to support students as they craft thoughtful connections between the evidence they have chosen and the text based claims that they have made.

MS 50 is excited to welcome ¡Repertorio Contigo! and their presentation of the play "La Gringa" on April 4! The New York Times writes that "La gringa is the story of a young woman from New York who goes to Puerto Rico in search of her extended family. When she finds them, the complicated misperceptions that develop on all sides unfold in comic dialogue that arouses constant shouts of laughter and bursts of applause." This Spanish language play is performed with English supertitles, making it fun for our whole community.

There will be a student performance for our theatre, dual language, and BSE classes at 1:00PM and a FREE performance for our families at 6:00PM. We want to thank our New York City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez and the Cultural Immigrant Initiative for generously sponsoring this performance! We hope to see you there!
