Rilke Schule German Immersion School proudly celebrates 20 years of language, culture, and community!
Rilke Schule began as a grassroots vision in March 2006, when veteran educator Jo Sanders, along with a dedicated group of parents and German teachers, came together to create a German immersion charter school in Anchorage. Their efforts led to a major milestone in December 2006, when the Anchorage School District approved the charter, marking the official founding of Rilke Schule German Immersion School of Arts and Sciences.
Rilke Schule opened its doors in August 2007 at Changepoint Church, welcoming its inaugural class of approximately 180 students and becoming Alaska’s first K–8 German immersion program. Early cornerstone moments included a move to a facility on International Airport Road in January, 2008, and establishing a school wide commitment to German language and culture for all Rilke students.
A fun fact! The only two Rilke teachers that were on the 2007/2008 staff and still teach today at Rilke Schule is Herr Helgesen and Frau Robertson.
As the school marks its 20th anniversary, we celebrate the vision, determination, and foundational moments that continue to shape its future.
