PHS FCCLA State Qualifiers

Piper High School FCCLA attended the State Leadership Conference in Wichita, held April 6–8. The chapter is led by Megan Geist, who serves as the adviser for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

Five high school members competed in STAR Competitive Events, showcasing their skills and dedication in various career-focused categories:

Emily Franz competed in the Professional Presentation category with her project titled Teacher Burnout. She earned Top Gold, securing a spot at the National Leadership Conference this July.

Samantha McKee earned Gold and qualified for Nationals in the Job Interview competition. She developed a professional portfolio for a position in the Family and Consumer Sciences field, aligned with her current education and experience.

Kamryn Monroe participated in Food Innovations, where she developed and refined a smoothie recipe. She tested her product with high school focus groups and presented her findings. Kamryn earned Gold and placed fourth in the state.

Ella Nolan competed in Culinary Arts, earning Top Gold for the second consecutive year and qualifying for Nationals once again. Her presentation featured a Two-Steppin' Tenderloin with Spinach Pesto, Brown Rice, and a Steakhouse Chopped Salad.

Keeley Vicker, in her first year in FCCLA and at state competition, earned Silver in the Baking and Pastry category. Her work included a decorated cake, white chocolate cranberry cookies, layered buttermilk biscuits, and cream puffs.

Piper Creek Chess State Qualifiers

Congratulations to the Piper Creek Elementary chess team for their outstanding performance at the State Championship held at Emporia State University on March 15th! Seven students from our team competed against a total of 464 students from across the state in four different sections. All seven of our players participated in the K-5 section, which included 88 students from 17 different school teams. Each participant played six games.

The Piper Creek Elementary team achieved an impressive 4th place overall. Furthermore, three of our students, Andrew Schepmann, Alexander Cook, and Natalie Casner, each won individual medals for securing three victories. Remarkably, these students played their very first tournament game just four months prior in December, making this State Championship their debut at this level. Adding to their achievements, the team also secured a commendable second place at the Rockhurst Chess Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, in January.

The Piper Creek Elementary chess team is coached by Pravakar Mondal and Chess Volp.

Robotics State Qualifiers

Good evening, esteemed board members, faculty, families, and students. It is with great pride that we recognize the outstanding achievements of our high school robotics teams—Team Stealth 1802 from Piper High School and Team Stealth 21536 from our FIRST Tech Challenge program.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) – Team Stealth 21536

Team Stealth 21536 had an impressive season in the 2024–2025 FTC "INTO THE DEEP" challenge. They earned second place in the Design Award and were part of the Winning Alliance at the KC West League Tournament. At the Missouri/Kansas State Championship on March 8, 2025, they secured second place in the prestigious Think Award, which recognizes a team’s excellence in the engineering design process and documentation.

Their performance in the championship was particularly outstanding. After a strong qualification round, Team Stealth 21536 advanced into the playoff bracket, where they competed fiercely against top teams from across the state. They advanced through multiple rounds with skillful driving, effective autonomous routines, and coordinated strategy. Their alliance pushed through the semifinals and made a deep run into the finals bracket, ultimately demonstrating elite-level performance and gracious professionalism throughout the day.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) – Team Stealth 1802

Team Stealth 1802 represented Piper High School at the 2025 Greater Kansas City Regional, held from March 26 to 29 at Park Hill South High School in Riverside, Missouri. Competing against 35 other teams, they secured 5 wins in 11 qualification matches, finishing 26th overall. While they did not advance to the playoffs, their dedication, technical skill, and teamwork were evident throughout the competition. We are currently awaiting confirmation to see if Team Stealth 1802 will receive a bid to compete at the Missouri FRC Off-Season State Championship, scheduled for early June.

A highlight of the event was team member Brady Livengood receiving the prestigious FIRST Dean's List Finalist Award. This honor is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to spreading the mission of FIRST. Dean’s List Finalists represent the best of the best across all teams, and are considered for national recognition at the FIRST Championship. Brady was selected from among 70 students nominated by their respective teams—each one considered a top leader and contributor in their program. Being selected as a finalist places Brady among an elite group of students nationwide. Brady will be attending the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas this week, where he will sit for the opportunity to be selected as a World Dean’s List Finalist—an honor that recognizes the top student leaders from across the globe. We also want to recognize Elijah Shack, who was our second nominee for the Dean’s List Award. Although he was not selected to move forward to the World Championship level, this in no way reflects a shortcoming on his part. Elijah’s dedication to engineering excellence, mentorship of younger teammates, and strong embodiment of FIRST values made him an outstanding candidate. His nomination highlights the depth of leadership and character present within our team.

Both teams exemplify the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and perseverance. Their achievements reflect the strength of our STEM programs and the dedication of our educators and mentors. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and look forward to their continued success.

We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Assistant Coach Adam Schack and mentors Hudson Shack, Jason Wendell, and Katie Comer. Their tireless guidance, technical expertise, and unwavering support were instrumental in shaping this season. Additionally, we want to thank all of the parents who generously donated their time, provided team meals, helped with transportation, and ensured our students were supported every step of the way. Without their leadership and commitment, these seasons would not have been possible, and our accomplishments would be far fewer.

PHS 5A State Boys Basketball

The Piper High School Boys' Basketball team concluded an outstanding 2024-2025 season with an impressive 21-4 overall record. Demonstrating consistency and excellence on the court, the team earned a return trip to the KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament in Emporia for the second consecutive year, where they secured a third-place finish among a highly competitive field. Additionally, the team captured the United Kansas Conference (UKC) championship title for the second year in a row, solidifying their reputation as a dominant force within the league.

The season was also marked by notable individual achievements. Senior guard PJ Moore reached a major career milestone by surpassing 1,000 career points. His leadership and performance earned him recognition as the UKC Co-Player of the Year, as well as a selection to the prestigious 1st Team All-State roster. Teammate DJ Jackson also garnered statewide recognition for his outstanding play, being named to the 2nd Team All-State. The accomplishments of the team and its standout players reflect the hard work, dedication, and skill that define the Piper basketball program.

Classified HYPE SQUAD Award: Janet Guilfoil and Cueler Johnson

April’s Classified Hype Squad Award goes to TWO of our awesome Piper Prairie Lunchroom Aides, Mrs. Janet Guilfoil and Mr. Cue Johnson. Their supervisor said, “Janet and Cue are exceptional! Being a lunchroom aide is a challenging task, especially when you consider that Prairie has 540 students under the age of 8. Cue and Janet have a friendly and welcoming demeanor. They are always positive. When faced with any task from opening milk cartons, cleaning tables or controlling noise, they always do it with a smile. Furthermore, they take the time to establish relationships with both students and staff. They involve students in routines and can always be counted on to keep the Prairie lunch room running smoothly.”

Certified HYPE SQUAD Award: Jessica Asbury

April’s Certified Hype Squad Award goes to Jessica Asbury, the district’s elementary real world learning coordinator. Beyond making Piper Elementary a place of daily learning and discovery, Jessica brought an extraordinary vision to life—one that will impact students across our entire district. Thanks to her innovation, leadership, and heart for kids, a donated school bus from DS Bus Lines is being transformed into a mobile makerspace and collaboration hub that will connect students across grade levels, schools, and programs.

And here’s the best part—Jessica didn’t just dream it, she drove it (literally). She went above and beyond by earning her CDL license so she could personally transport students and bring this vision to life every single day.

From creating hands-on, real-world learning experiences during the school day to breaking down barriers to after-school access, this bus is now a symbol of our district’s Connected Culture Among All and Future Ready focus.

Jessica, thank you for dreaming big, taking action, and showing us all what it means to #BelievetheHype. We’re better because of your vision—and so are our kids.
