Sara Staley Named Director of Advanced Academics, Accountability and CTE Sara Staley Named Director of Advanced Academics, Accountability and CTE

Sunnyvale ISD named Sara Staley as its new Director of Advanced Academics, Accountability and CTE starting with the 2025-2026 school year. Courtney Sharkey, the current Director, was recently named as the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for the 2025-2026 school year.

In her new role, Staley will focus on overseeing gifted and talented programs, career and technical education pathways, and district accountability measures.

"I am especially passionate about growing our STEM programs and enriching our gifted and talented education in the lower grades to create strong foundations that support student success through high school and beyond," Staley said.

Staley, who has served the district for 10 years, most recently as principal of Sunnyvale Intermediate School, has worked in education for 27 years. She served as the Sunnyvale Elementary Principal from 2015 -2019 before opening the Intermediate School in 2019.

“My approach to leadership and education is rooted in building strong relationships and leading with a servant's heart," she said. “I believe that supporting our teachers, students, and families with compassion, consistency, and care is the foundation of a successful school and district,” she said.

Her extensive classroom and administrative experience positions her to build upon the foundation created by her predecessor, Courtney Sharkey.

"This new role will allow me to combine my passion for student growth, innovation in education, and community collaboration—all with the goal of helping Raiders reach their full potential," she said.

During her tenure as intermediate school principal, Staley established a school-wide STEM culture and formed a partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame to bring nationally recognized programming to the campus.

Additionally, she developed an annual STEM Career Day involving community members and businesses from across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, which she said strengthened real-world connections for students.

“It laid the groundwork for the type of community outreach and career pathway development that I’m excited to continue in my new role,” Staley said.

Staley shared that her experience as a principal has given her an understanding of student needs, curriculum implementation, and the importance of creating meaningful learning opportunities at different grade levels.

“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with students, families, and teachers to support academic growth, which has prepared me to lead district-wide initiatives that expand advanced academics and career pathways,” she said.

Looking ahead, Staley plans to prioritize relationship-building across the district's four campuses while developing long-term objectives for student success.

"My long-term goal is to create meaningful opportunities in grades K–7 that allow students to explore various fields of interest, helping to shape their future CTE pathway before entering 8th grade," Staley said. "I also aim to support continuous improvement in student outcomes, measured by increased industry certifications, college credit attainment, and career placement rates."
