At Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School, we use LiveSchool to track PBIS points, behavior, and student participation in school activities. With the LiveSchool app, parents can see how their child is behaving (positive and negatively) in real time—often before the teacher makes direct contact. If there is a concern, we can provide supports for the students and teachers. Students must return their sheets to the school.

Miller's Expectations

The use of electronic devices—including cell phones, AirPods, smartwatches, gaming consoles, and Bluetooth headsets—is strictly prohibited during the school day. This policy is in effect from 8:30 AM, when students enter the building, until 4:05 PM, when they are dismissed.

If a student must bring a device to school, it must be turned off and turned in to the teacher during supervision. Students are not permitted by state law to have cellphones or other personal devices on their person, including in pockets or purses, during school hours. Devices will be confiscated.

Any use of an electronic device that disrupts the educational environment may result in disciplinary action. Disruptive use includes, but is not limited to:

  • Academic dishonesty

  • Cyberbullying*

  • Harassment

  • Unauthorized recording or photographing

  • Violations of behavior expectations outlined in the BCSD Code of Conduct

Students bring personal electronic devices to school at their own risk. The school and its staff are not responsible for the damage, loss, or theft of any personal devices. We are not investigating any loss or thefts. Parents and family members are encouraged not to call/text their student until after 4:15. If it is a transportation issue, parents will need to contact the front office.

Device Pick-Up Policy for Parents

Parents wishing to retrieve a confiscated device must do so between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Please note that the front office closes promptly at 4:00 PM—devices will not be released outside of these hours. This includes weekends.

As parents and guardians, we understand your desire to stay connected with your child throughout the day. In the event of a school safety emergency, the State of Georgia has mandated a district-wide emergency response system that will notify you immediately with accurate and specific information to help ease concerns and ensure transparency.

We ask that you:

  • Trust the school's communication system to provide timely updates during emergencies.

  • Avoid encouraging your child to defy school policies by referencing “Mama Law” (e.g., “my mama said”) or other personal expectations that may conflict with school rules or state law. Personal household rules cannot override district or legal requirements enforced at school.

  • Ensure your contact information is current in Infinite Campus so you do not miss any important updates or alerts.

By working together, we can maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for every student.

Restroom Breaks

Miller provides scheduled restroom breaks every other class period to maintain safety, structure, and supervision throughout the day.

In the event of an emergency, a student may be permitted to use the restroom outside the scheduled time. Teachers will use professional judgment to assess the urgency. In such cases, the student must wait for an adult escort or supervision before leaving the classroom.

This protocol ensures:

  • Student safety and accountability

  • Minimized disruptions

  • Proper supervision at all times

Students who walk out of class, become defiant, or display disrespectful behavior toward teachers or staff will receive disciplinary action in accordance with the Bibb County Code of Conduct. At Miller, we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and disruption-free learning environment. All students are expected to follow teacher/staff directions and uphold our school-wide behavior expectations. Please note that "Mama Law" or home-based rules do not apply in the school setting. While we respect the values and expectations set at home, all students are expected to follow the Bibb County School District Code of Conduct and Miller’s school-wide procedures during the instructional day.

Arrival at School

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Parents who drop their children off in the mornings are asked to use the carpool area at the rear of the school. Please do not drive in the areas designated for buses only in front of the school or drop students off on Hendley Street near the bank or the private lot. Failure to follow this procedure could result in a citation. Parents can sign their students up for the fee-based Morning Care program by contacting Alicia Chambliss, our Morning Care Coordinator. Students who arrive after 9:05 AM will be marked tardy. They will need to be dropped off in front of the school and a parent/guardian must sign them in. Students eating breakfast should go directly to the cafeteria until they are dismissed to homeroom by 9:00. Students not eating breakfast should go directly to homeroom to prepare for the school day. Miller will not be responsible for supervising students left outside or on campus before 8:30 am unless they participate in a school-supervised activity approved by the principal or their designee. Parents of students left unsupervised will be contacted and may be referred to the Bibb County Campus Police or Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Dismissal Procedures

Students will be dismissed according to their mode of transportation. Once a student is dismissed, he or she will not be allowed back into the building. Car riders will be dismissed at 4:05 p.m. to report to the designated area for pickup. Students who are picked up by car will exit from the rear doors of the building, near the office area. Parents must use the carpool area at the rear of the school to pick up their children. Parents should not drive in the areas designated for buses only in front of the school area until after 4:20 PM. Students cannot walk to the bank to be picked up. Students who walk home will be dismissed at 4:07 p.m. and expected to leave campus immediately. Bus riders will remain in their classrooms until their buses are called. Students will report to their designated bus to board. Students involved in after-school activities will be called to report to their designated areas. Students should not be left on campus after 4:15 unless involved in a school-sponsored extracurricular activity. Parents will be notified of any student remaining at school after 4:25 PM. Additionally, students are strongly discouraged from trespassing/loitering on private property before or after school. The school/district is not responsible for student behavior once students are on private property. These incidents will be referred to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. Parents are encouraged not to drop off or pick students up from neighboring shopping centers or the Midsouth Bank, as we are not liable for student safety once they exit our campus. Miller will not be responsible for supervising students left outside or on campus after 4:35 pm; unless they participate in a school-supervised activity approved by the principal or their designee. Parents of unsupervised students will be contacted and may be referred to the Bibb County Campus Police or Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

If your student has a sibling attending Miller they will not be allowed to walk to their class, they must wait near the designated sign at the front of the school for pick-up. This ensures a safe and orderly dismissal process for all students.

Q: What constitutes chronic misbehavior?
A: Chronic misbehavior refers to repeated and persistent disruptive behaviors that interfere with the learning environment and are not resolved through initial interventions. This can include frequent rule-breaking, disrespect towards staff and peers, and failure to comply with school policies.

Q: How does the school address chronic misbehavior?
A: The school uses a tiered approach to address chronic misbehavior, starting with classroom interventions and progressing to more intensive supports if needed. This includes meetings with parents, behavior plans, counseling, and, in severe cases, disciplinary actions. At Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School, we are committed to providing a safe and productive learning environment for all students. To ensure this, any student who repeatedly engages in behavior that disrupts the operation of the school or interferes with the learning of others will face disciplinary consequences. These consequences may include, but are not limited to, in school suspension, suspension, loss of privileges, and, in severe cases, alternative placement at SOAR academy. Our goal is to address and correct disruptive behavior promptly and effectively while supporting the student's ability to make positive changes.

Q: My student says they don’t like the school food. What can I do?

A: We understand that students have individual preferences when it comes to food. While our cafeteria follows USDA guidelines to provide balanced, nutritious meals, we also encourage families to pack a lunch from home: Students are welcome to bring a healthy, non-shareable lunch from home. Please avoid large bags of chips, candy, or soda. Drinks should be in a spill-proof container. If you have meal concerns or dietary restriction, contact our school’s cafeteria manager, Ms. T. Harris. We are happy to help with accommodations when possible and to address specific dietary needs or preferences. Please note that students should not go without eating. Skipping meals can lead to headaches, stomach aches, and difficulty focusing in class.

Q: How much homework should my child expect each night?

A: Homework will vary by subject and grade level, but students should expect to have a reasonable amount of independent practice to reinforce classroom instruction. If your child is struggling to complete homework regularly or if assignments seem excessive, please reach out to their teacher to discuss support options.

Q: I want to change my child’s schedule, class, or teacher. What is the process?

A: At this time, schedule changes are not permitted unless there is a documented academic or placement concern. Our teachers are highly qualified and committed to supporting all students.
If your child is missing a required class or appears to be in the wrong level, please contact the school counselor. Teacher or friend preference-based requests cannot be honored.

Q: What is a Support Connections class, and why is my student enrolled in it?

A: Support Connections is designed to provide targeted academic support, such as help with reading, math, or emotional regulation. Placement is determined using student data, teacher recommendations, and team-based decisions to support student success.

Q: How often are grades updated in Infinite Campus/Parent Portal?

A: Teachers are expected to post at least one grade per week, usually by the following Monday. This allows time for reviewing, grading, and inputting assignments accurately. Parents and students are encouraged to check Infinite Campus weekly to stay informed on progress and to address concerns early.

Georgia Law & Parent Conduct on School Grounds

All parents, guardians, and visitors are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and appropriate manner while on school property. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1182) makes it unlawful for any person to disrupt or interfere with the operation of a public school.

Key Expectations:

  • Disruptive behavior, including yelling, using profane language, or refusing to follow staff directives, may result in removal from campus and possible criminal charges.

  • Parents are not permitted to aggressively confront students or staff members directly regarding disciplinary or academic matters. All concerns must be addressed through proper administrative channels. Any threatening behavior implied or stated toward staff, students, or other parents will be taken seriously and may result in removal from campus and possible criminal charges.
    .
  • Individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs on school property—including those who smell of marijuana—will be immediately reported to law enforcement and social services. While we respect the personal choices of parents and guardians, please understand that marijuana remains illegal in the state of Georgia, except under very limited medical circumstances.
