5 Things to Know Weekly Update
February 18, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back from the long weekend – I hope you had a relaxing time with family and friends. My husband and I went to Desert Hot Springs to soak for a bit, but now we are back to reality with some more questioning of DEI and immigration developments coming our way. It’s a tough time right now: I won’t sugarcoat it. You have my word, however, that we will continue to support all of our students and employees; celebrate our similarities and differences; and above all, make sure everyone here at GWC – currently and in the future – feels safe, respected and valued. I am so proud of the work we do here – let’s have a great week.

Black History Month continues with an art show opening today entitled “The Will to Love” with pieces by Jasmine McNeal focusing on the transmutation of spirituality through Black creation. It’s from 4 - 6 p.m. TODAY. Then tomorrow, learn about soul food at the Student Union at noon with some sampling allowed.
Don’t forget our first Spring Summit on Thursday for ALL employees, with sessions designed for classified professionals as well as faculty and managers. We kick off at 8 a.m. at Forum 1 and have a special guest speaker to discuss allyship, a timely topic. The full schedule will be sent later today.
We had an excellent ISER review session last week – I heard that about 50 people attended and offered comments. The report for ACCJC looks great – many thanks to VPI Jen and Lauren Sosenko, as well as many contributors. My hope is always that producing the accreditation self-evaluation be as painless as possible, and we seem to be achieving that. No all night sessions to finish!!
Last week I held one of my favorite events every semester: in this case, Conchas and Coffee with the President where I get to meet students and give them something special to eat. I always like to hear from them about their favorite faculty, and many were mentioned, including Mike Russell, Amy Jennings, Ruth Calcanas and Rachel Wegter. So congratulations to all of you for making a difference in your students’ lives!
This week is compressed and therefore really, really busy – I’m hoping to work with Rick Hicks on an RFP for food services this coming fall and get my PPT done in time for the Summit on Thursday! I’ll be on campus until Friday afternoon, when I leave for a weekend (!) meeting to find out about AI.
