Principal's Corner - Mr. Schara
Holton families:
As you have probably noticed, we have been doing different forms of testing this year in addition to our STAR testing. The purpose of the testing is to identify the areas in reading that each child needs to improve. This is all part of the state mandate around improving reading scores statewide. Last year we trained our teachers and this year we are executing a new schedule with enhanced time for reading and intervention for all students. Using all the data at our disposal will help make sure your child has the appropriate reading support. Support can also look like an extension if your child is above grade level in reading.
Our teachers meet weekly in Professional Learning Communities to compare data and adjust small group instruction to meet students' needs. Soon, we will be adding small group intervention to their support. We have monthly data meetings where we look at student growth and discuss what reading strategies will be appropriate for each student. With our former schedule, a 7-period day, we were unable to allocate time to do this; however, with our current schedule (much closer to an elementary schedule) we are able to use our time more flexibly.
The adjustments we've made this year to our schedule and reading instruction require a tremendous amount of learning on the part of our teachers. As usual, they have stepped up and are making huge adjustments. We meet weekly in PLC's, monthly for data meetings and use our district wide Professional Development time to provide the necessary training. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or contact Mr. Malo or myself and we would be happy to discuss our plan.
Thank you for your support,
Mr. Schara

Mr. Brown's Corner
Happy December Holton Families!
I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving Break was a good one. A chance to celebrate some of my favorite words that begin with the letter “F”—Family, Friends, Food, Football, and Free time.
For our PBIS Celebration this month, we went in a different direction. Instead of celebrating ourselves, we celebrated others. Our students spent some time during our last day writing letters to senior citizens in nursing homes that may or may not have had visitors recently. It was a chance to share the vibrance of youth with the experience of age. Reading some of the letters written made my heart swell with pride. We have some kind and deeply caring students at IJ Holton Intermediate School.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t give my monthly weather apparel notice. Now that the winter months are finally upon us, here are a few reminders about outside recess:
-We go outside every day unless the air temperature is BELOW zero degrees or the windchill factor is more than -10 degrees.
-Students are NOT allowed to go back into the building to get their coat, nor are they allowed to leave the cafeteria to get it. They must grab everything when the teacher lines them up to bring them to lunch.
-Coats, boots, hats, gloves, and snowpants are STRONGLY encouraged. Please speak to your child’s teacher or Ms. Veronica if you do not have any of those items.
-Students are allowed to walk in the snow if they are wearing snow boots.
-Students may play in the snow (build snowmen, build forts, make snow angels, slide down snow piles, etc.) ONLY if they are wearing a coat, snowpants, boots, hats, and gloves.
If dressed properly, winter can be some of the most fun times there are!
Lastly for the month, we are entering a stretch of the year where our children are overjoyed with the upcoming season. In their excited state, expectations tend to slide or disappear altogether. Please remind and reinforce with your child or children to adhere to the rules and expectations we have established at Holton. As a song that I once or twice have heard before sings, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Let’s keep it wonderful.
At IJ Holton, we encourage our students to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and to Do Their Best! If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please email me david.brown@austin.k12.mn.us or call me at 460-1525. Bring on winter!

Message from the office
Planning Ahead for Student Appointments
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We kindly ask that you plan ahead when scheduling appointments for your child during the school day. To help us ensure a smooth and timely dismissal, please notify the office in advance and arrive with enough time to allow for your child to be called from class.
Your cooperation helps minimize disruptions to learning and ensures your child is ready when you arrive. Thank you for your continued support!
📞 Keep Emergency Contacts Up to Date!
To help us ensure your child’s safety, please take a moment to review and update your emergency contact information. If your phone number, address, or emergency contacts have changed recently, let us know as soon as possible. Accurate contact details help us reach you quickly in case of illness, injury, or other urgent situations.
You can update your information by logging into the parent portal.
Thank you for helping us keep our records current!
***LOST AND FOUND
Please remind your child to check the lost and found area. All items will be disposed of during holiday breaks. We get overcrowded and we lack space. We remind kids frequently to check the lost and found and instead of it downsizing it gets bigger, we don't have the space, so items get disposed of during our holiday breaks.
⛄⛅⚡With Cold weather approaching keep in mind that our doors do not open until 7:45. Staff are not expected to be here until 5 minutes prior to students' arrival. Do not drop off your child or send them early unless they are dressed for appropriate weather conditions. and are prepared to wait outside.
Warm regards,
IJH Office Staff
Message From the Counselors
Dear IJ & Ellis Parents and Guardians,
As we move forward in the school year, we want to take a moment to highlight something that makes a big difference in every child’s success: regular school attendance.
Congratulations!
Between IJ and Ellis, we had 276 students with perfect attendance. These students’ tireless commitment to attendance does not go unnoticed. We see you!
Why Attendance Is So Important
Children who attend school consistently are more likely to:
- Build strong academic skills
- Stay connected with friends and teachers
- Develop confidence and independence
- Be prepared for high school and beyond
Students in grades 5–8 are at a key stage in their learning. Missing just a few days can make it harder for them to keep up with classwork, group projects, and new concepts that build on one another.
Did You Know?
- Missing 2 days per month adds up to 18 days a year—that’s nearly a full month of lost learning.
- Even excused absences can make it difficult for students to stay on track.
- Students who attend regularly are more likely to earn good grades and feel positive about school.
How You Can Help
You play the most important role in shaping strong attendance habits! Here’s how you can support your child:
- Establish a consistent bedtime to make mornings smoother.
- Prepare school materials the night before to reduce stress and rushing.
- Schedule appointments after school whenever possible.
- Reach out to us if your family is facing challenges, we’re here to help.
We’re In This Together
Our goal is to ensure that every student feels supported, successful, and confident. If your family needs help with transportation, morning routines, or any other barriers to attendance, please contact the school office. We have resources available and are ready to partner with you.
Thank you for your continued support. When students show up every day, amazing things happen!
Final Thoughts
Lastly, winter is the perfect time to cozy up and connect! Try sharing “highs and lows” at dinner, taking a silly winter walk, or doing a quick activity together. Small moments make a big difference.
Cold mornings and busy schedules can make attendance a challenge, but every day in school helps students stay confident and connected. If your child needs a little extra boost to get going, we are here to help!

Kayla Dickman [5th grade]
Kirstin Norby [6th grade]

The BARR model emphasizes a whole student approach where we prioritize the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students so that they are able to thrive. One aspect of the BARR program is Big Block meetings after school on Mondays and Tuesdays. See below for the BARR strategies and the summary of our U-Time sessions for November. If you ever have any questions about BARR at IJ Holton, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Grade 5 The Fantastic Five In this lesson, the students identified qualities that make a good friend. After brainstorming ideas with their class, students had the chance to write down the top five qualities that they looked for in a friend.
Grade 6 Person of the Year Students had the opportunity to learn about our need for goals and dreams. They learned about people who have been named “Person of the Year”. Then, they filled out their own “Person of the Year” handout where they wrote about and reflected on what they would like to be famous for in the future.
11/13/25
Grade 5 Let's Listen Students recognized the skills and behaviors of a good listener. They played a game called “telephone” that taught them how a message can be misunderstood when it is shared and re-shared by many people. Students had time to reflect and write or draw about how they plan to improve their listening skills and behaviors.
Grade 6 Adventure Journal An Adventure Journal is a list of all the adventures or things that a person hopes to do. The students had a chance to create their own Adventure Journal either on paper or electronically by selecting images that they found online. Their teacher encouraged them to dream big and set their goals high!
11/20/25
Grade 5 See How Lucky I Am Students were given the opportunity to identify and appreciate their unique talents and skills. They did this through a story and activity involving the different pieces of silverware learning that each has its own special purpose.
Grade 6 Letter of Understanding In this lesson, students had the chance to share information with their teacher in the form of a letter. This will help their teacher understand them better. Students were encouraged to share things such as pets, places they had traveled to, activities and hobbies they enjoyed, and hopes they have for the future.

Consistent Attendance Matters!
At Austin Public Schools, we know that showing up matters. Consistent attendance is one of the clearest predictors of a student’s success, not only in the classroom, but in life after graduation. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically, graduate on time, and find success in college, careers, or both.
Strong attendance also tells us something important: it reflects how connected students and families/caregivers feel to their school community. When attendance drops, whether for specific groups or across the district, it often signals challenges we can help address, including school climate and engagement, as well as social, emotional, or family barriers.
That’s why we’re focused on building schools where students want to be. Through strong instruction, supportive relationships, and programs that care for the whole child, Austin Public Schools is working to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn each day. When students feel that connection, they show up, and when they show up, they succeed.
Please watch our new video about the importance of attendance.

Strategic Priorities
Safe and Welcoming Learning Environment:
· We had 72% parent attendance at conferences.
· We are continuing to adjust to teacher feedback by providing more learning around our PLC work.
· Our first dance was a huge success with students. More to come.
· We continue to tweak our schedule to provide appropriate time for special education teachers to access students more effectively.
· We have added voluntary weekly before and after school staff meetings to make sure information is shared equitably.
Packer Profile for all students:
· We are getting closer to choosing a new Project Lead the Way course for next year to replace Green Architecture.
· We are working closely with AHS to find better connections to the Packer Profile. We are looking at student artifacts that could be included in the Portfolio.
· We continue to prepare for our January Robotics tournament.
District Wide multi-tiered systems of support for all students:
· In December we are using teacher’s PLC time to instruct and model how effective PLC’s work.
· In January we will have enough data for each student to begin small group interventions during the school day in reading for all students.
· We made grading adjustments in science and social studies (from quarter grades to semester grades).
Excellence in resource management:
· The funds raised from our dance and our craft show are used to provide our PBIS rewards every Friday.
· We have applied for another grant to fund our classroom libraries.
· We are currently on track with our budget with no surprises at this time.
