The Final Whistle: WCSD Celebrates the Class of 2026
On Monday, June 1st, Whitehall High School held it's 122nd commencement ceremony at the PPL Center in Allentown. The night was a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication that the Class of 2026 has shown to get to this milestone in their educational journey. WCSD is proud of the accomplishments of these graduates and look forward to their future contributions to our community and the world. The Class of 2026 is truly #ZephyrTough!
Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Whitehall High School
Incorporating the ten traits of the Profile of a Zephyr is foundational to each building in the Whitehall-Coplay School District. Each month, we will highlight a specific trait and how students throughout the district are exemplifying what it takes to be a successful Zephyr.
Mrs. Waltman’s class truly brought the Profile of a Zephyr skill of responsibility to life during the month of April, and their results speak for themselves. They earned the most STARS in their STAR Jar across all of Steckel, and they also took on the April bonus challenge by achieving the largest growth in STARS from March to April. Their hard work paid off with a well deserved celebration at the start of May and a first place finish, earning the golden lunch tray for their classroom.
What makes this accomplishment even more meaningful is the journey. Prior to April, Mrs. Waltman’s class had not yet broken into the top three. Through consistency, focus, and a shared commitment to doing the right thing, they transformed their lunch behavior in a big way.
So how did they do it? They focused on what responsibility looks like each day by waiting patiently in line, prioritizing eating, engaging in calm and kind conversations, keeping their focus forward, cleaning up their space, and respecting quiet expectations during and after trash time. Small actions, done consistently, led to big results.
Evangeline from Mrs. Waltman’s class shared some insight behind their success, “Mrs. Waltman would always cheer us up before heading to lunch and remind us of how we can earn STARS at lunch by getting quiet.”
Mekhi shared, “We tried our best to be responsible by keeping our voices down. As a class we worked together to be calm and remind students in our class of expectations. We also reminded each other to clean up because another class was coming to sit at the lunch tables and we did not want the lunch ladies to have to clean up a mess that we made.”
A huge congratulations to Mrs. Waltman’s class for setting the bar high and showing what is possible when responsibility becomes a team effort!
WCSD Staff Shout-Out
In this section, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible educators of Whitehall-Coplay, as nominated by 12th grade students whose lives they've impacted. These teachers have gone above and beyond to inspire, support, and make a lasting impact, embodying the true spirit of "We Are Zephyrs".
Valeria Restrepo & Mrs. Cinicola
How has this faculty/staff member contributed to your personal growth or academic journey?
She was the first to see potential in me. She wa also the reason I fell in love with Environmental Science and Science Olympiad. No matter the situation I was always able to talk to her. She was like my teacher mother to me.
What do you appreciate most about this faculty/staff member?
Her kindness and compassion. She sees potential in her students and be helps them grow.
Violet Kelly & Ms. Arnold
How has this faculty/staff member contributed to your personal growth or academic journey?
Ms. Arnold taught me Biology and Zoology. I did great in both classes and still remember what was taught to me because she taught it so well.
What do you appreciate most about this faculty/staff member?
I appreciate her teaching style, attitude, and humor the most. She is supportive of her students and it felt like she really cared. She was patient with students and creative with the projects she assigned, which made it so easy and fun to learn in her classes. Without her I would have had a much harder time learning biology.
Mrs. Cinicola Recognized with Excellence Award
Mrs. Cinicola, one of the two Science Olympiad coaches at the high school, has won the top 2026 Science Olympiad Coaching Excellence Award. Each year the national Science Olympiad organization selects three coaches from high schools across the country. Coach nominations can come from the State Director, fellow coaches, and students who they have meaningfully impacted. Mrs. Cinicola's nomination came from Marilyn Ogunsemore. Marilyn was in Mrs. Cinicola's CP Environmental Science class freshman year, and joined Science Olympiad where she has received multiple EPC medals her junior and senior years. The selection process for the top award is rigorous. Coaches must be the recipient of a thoughtful nomination, possess outstanding character, promote Science Olympiad, and submit a compelling essay. As the nation's top high school Science Olympiad coach for 2026, Mrs. Cinicola is invited to and is planning to attend the in-person Build and Content Clinic for Science Olympiad in Naperville, Illinois. Her transportation, lodging, and admission to both clinics is covered as part of her award. Mrs. Cinicola hopes that this award, along with the high school team's incredible success this year, highlight their high level of competitiveness and passion. They are eagerly looking forward to an amazing 2027 season!
WCSD Students Impress at State PA Media & Design Competition
On Tuesday, May 19th, two students from the Whitehall-Coplay School District competed in the state PA Media & Design Competition held at Elizabethtown College. The PA Media and Design Competition is an annual event that highlights Pennsylvania students’ application skills, creativity and knowledge. Students are able to unleash their creativity, learn how to convey information more dynamically, and enhance the learning process. The students submitted projects in one of six categories: 3D Design, Animation, Digital Movie, Logo and Graphic Design, Programming, and Web Page Design. The day consisted of activities to experience the Elizabethtown campus and an opportunity to interact with student competitiors from around the state.
This year, WCSD was proudly represented by Amber Hopple (Logo and Graphic Design) and Chase Wittig (Programming). Both had exceleent projects and showed their #ZephyrPride all day. Extra congratulations go out to Amber for receiving third place in the Logo and Graphic Design category.

Meet the WCSD Staff
Mark Freeman, Computer Science Teacher, Whitehall High School
How many years have you worked in education?
This is my 19th year in education and 14th at WCSD.
What are your favorite hobbies?
Playing discgolf, coaching my kids sports, watching sports, and traveling
What do you love about the Whitehall-Coplay School District?
I love the diversity of the school district. It is a wonderful multicultural environment that helps prepare students for a globalized world. A true melting pot!
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I would give myself some social advice: Look at your current friend group. Are they motivated? Are they kind? Do they lift you or others up, or do they drag you down into drama or trouble? Also, that you don't need to be popular; you just need a small squad of people who make you want to be a better version of yourself.
Dr. Emily Pisco, Library Media Specialist, Whitehall-Coplay Middle School
How many years have you worked in education?
This is my 24th year in education and 23rd at WCSD.
What are your favorite hobbies?
My current favorite place to be is on the sideline of sporting event cheering on my sons. When there are no sports to be seen, I enjoy reading and hanging out with my two dogs.
What do you love about the Whitehall-Coplay School District?
I have loved the one campus feel of our district. I love that our district is on the smaller side of the surrounding districts and has offered outstanding opportunities to our students. I felt so strongly about the quality of education at WCSD that I moved my family into the district in 2021. I have enjoyed getting to see my boys become Zephyrs.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
Have more fun, stress a little less, things work out one way or another.

The Zephyrs ended the spring season on an INCREDIBLE high note. We did a lot of winning to close out the year with a combined record of 50 - 21 between Softball, Baseball and Volleyball. Softball's season came to an end with a loss in the 2nd round of the district bracket against Stroudsburg, the girls finished with a record of 14 - 8. The Baseball team also made a solid run into the district playoffs but unfortunately lost in the semi-finals to Southern Lehigh and ended their season with a 17 - 7 record. Our Boys Volleyball ended the season with a record of 19 - 6, earning a Silver Medal at the EPC tournament and Silver Medal in the District Tournament. They continued on to the state level, beating Abington Heights in the first round of States and then played a tough Cumberland Valley team where we lost 3 -1 in a back and forth match. Track and Field sent two runners to States in Hershey, Llyneida Otanez for the 300M hurdles, and Junior Edrien Lee made her 2nd appearance at States in the 100M after she placed 1st in the District Meet.
