Lessons from Auschwitz: A Day of Remembrance and Reflection

This week, three of our students, accompanied by Mrs Nichols, travelled to Poland for a one-day educational visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp. The visit provided a powerful and deeply moving opportunity to learn about the Holocaust beyond the classroom. Walking through the site, seeing the preserved remains and hearing the stories of those who suffered and died helped bring the history of the Holocaust into a stark and personal focus. The visit was a reminder of the importance of remembering the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. It also highlighted the devastating consequences of prejudice, discrimination, antisemitism and the dangers of allowing hatred and intolerance to go unchallenged.

For our students, the experience offered an opportunity to reflect not only on the events of the past but also on the responsibilities we all share in the present. Understanding this history is essential in helping young people recognise the importance of respect, compassion, critical thinking and standing up for others. Although a single day cannot fully convey the scale of the atrocities committed, the visit offered an invaluable opportunity for learning, remembrance and reflection.

We are incredibly proud of our three students for taking part in this important educational experience and representing our school. Their visit reinforces the value of learning from history and ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. We remember the past to help shape a more compassionate, tolerant and inclusive future.

Our students commented below on this experience:

Attila: For me, participating in the LFA programme has proven to be a completely different way to learn about the Holocaust. From interactive discussions hosted by educators which carried us through the whole seminar and educational visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau to hearing a Holocaust survivor recall the events that took place during her early childhood in Nazi-occupied France, this opportunity was truly eye-opening. I really applaud the whole LFA team for their dedication to educating young people like me from across the country about the Holocaust. What stood out to me was the unique approach the educators took to give us an insight to the lives of Jewish people; how they thrived in communities across mainland Europe and how this was abruptly ended by the systematic extermination of Jewish men, women and children. With one of the most prominent examples of the Nazi and their collaborators’ crimes being Auschwitz-Birkenau, the visit to this particular concentration and death camp continued the process in which we focused on particular Jewish victims’ experiences in an attempt to celebrate their lives as well as recognising their murders. One story which particularly resonated with me is Viktor Frankl’s who observed how prisoners in Auschwitz, including himself, found purpose in their day-to-day lives no matter how brutal their oppression and complete degradation – their fight to survive maintained a sense of dignity which the Nazis actively tried to suppress. I believe that through learning personal stories of Jewish experience we can attempt to put the scale of the Holocaust into perspective and try to educate others about the sanctity of preserving human rights in a world where it seems ever more relevant to do so.

Ava: On our recent visit to Auschwitz, we spent a full day walking through the grounds of the former camp, guided by an educator who shared the history of each site and horrific survivor testimonies. We passed beneath the "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate, stood among the brick barracks, and viewed the collections of personal belongings left behind by those deported there. The scale of the site and the humanity of the artefacts made the history feel discomforting and dystopian. The visit concluded with a short reflection ceremony, during which several students read poetry and laid candles in memory of the victims. It was a sobering and deeply educational experience, and one that has left a lasting impression on me who plans to go again next year to keep learning about this horrific extermination of around 6.6 million men, women and children.

Year 7 Boys' Football

Anglo's Year 7 Boys' Football team won a nail biting contest in the Essex Cup. After normal time the score was locked at 1-1, but Anglo managed to score 2 goals in extra time to win 3-1. Anglo's captain, Oba, was our player of the match and scored twice (once from a free kick and once from a penalty). Our other goal was an outstanding curling effort from range that went into the top corner scored by Joey with the last kick of the game. Well done boys! Into the next round!
