Superintendent Update
West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
Dec. 19, 2025
Dear families,
As we approach the end of the year, the holiday season gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and appreciate all we’ve accomplished together. As Andy Williams sang, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
This season is special not just for the celebrations, but for the opportunities it brings to connect, show gratitude, and come together. Values that are alive and well in our schools.
So far this year, our students have made real progress. We’re seeing growth in important areas, especially in ELA and math in the lower grades. This success comes from thoughtful teaching, hard work, and our shared commitment to helping every child grow. It’s also been great to see our school communities thrive as we focus on building relationships and developing social-emotional skills like self-awareness, social awareness, goal-setting, and resilience.
We’ve focused on attendance this year, and I’m happy to report that our rates are going up across our schools. This progress is thanks to our staff and principals, who have found creative ways to recognize attendance, celebrate students, and keep learners engaged, both in class and through school-wide activities that help everyone feel a sense of belonging. I also want to sincerely thank YOU, our families, for working with us. Your efforts to get students to school each day when they’re healthy, and your teamwork with our staff when challenges come up, truly make a difference.
Outside the classroom, our schools have been full of creativity and celebration. Our recent IHS dramatic production of "Our Town" was outstanding, with great performances from the cast, crew, and everyone who helped make it happen. Our holiday concerts have also been a highlight, bringing families and community members together to celebrate our students’ talents and enjoy the spirit of the season. If you missed an elementary Singalong, or just want to re-watch and/or share it with a relative near or far, we have highlights from every building on YouTube.
As the holidays approach, I want to thank you for the trust, support, and care you give our schools every day. I wish you and your family a restful and joyful holiday season, full of connection and reflection. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year and continuing our important work together for our students.
In partnership,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D

District Office is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 22-24, Dec. 26-31 and Friday, Jan. 2. The office is closed on Christmas and New Year's Day. Regular hours resume Monday, Jan. 5, 2026 when school is also back in session.
EVERY DAY COUNTS!
WHY STUDENT ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. When students are present and engaged, they build strong academic foundations, develop social connections, and gain the skills needed for future opportunities. Missing school — even just a few days — can have a lasting impact.
Our Progress in Combating Chronic Absenteeism
Over the past several years, our district has worked diligently to reduce chronic absenteeism (students attending less than 90% of school days). Through targeted outreach, family engagement, and school-based supports, we are seeing real results:
- District-wide chronic absenteeism has decreased significantly.
- Grades 1-8: The rate dropped from 14% last year in Quarter 1 to 9% this year (Q1).
- Grades 9-12: The rate fell from 15.5% in Quarter 1 last year to 14.4% in Quarter 1 this year.
- Subgroup gaps are narrowing.
Historically, some student groups experienced much higher absenteeism rates than others at this point in the school year. This year, those differences are less pronounced. For example:
- Economically Disadvantaged students decreased from 21.1% to 16.1% in Grades 1–8.
- Students with Disabilities dropped from 22.4% to 13.2% in Grades 1–8.
- English Language Learners improved from 21.7% to 17.5% in Grades 1–8.
These improvements reflect the hard work of our educators, families, and community partners. Together, we are creating conditions for every student to thrive.
Why Attendance Matters More Than Ever
Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to:
- Achieve higher academic performance and meet grade-level expectations.
- Develop strong social-emotional skills through consistent peer interaction.
- Graduate on time and pursue college or career opportunities.
Even missing two days per month can add up to 18 days a year, putting students at risk of falling behind. Every day truly counts.
How You Can Help
Families play a vital role in supporting attendance. Here are a few tips:
- Establish routines for bedtime and morning preparation.
- Schedule appointments outside school hours whenever possible.
- Communicate with your child’s school if challenges arise—they are here to help.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure every student is present, engaged, and learning. Together, we can keep moving forward!
HELMER NATURE CENTER
DROP OFF YOUR TREES AFTER CHRISTMAS!
Residents have been donating their holiday trees for this event since 1976. HNC accepts trees from Dec. 26 until Jan. 17, when High Falls Tree Service and Irondequoit Lawn & Landscape transform the trees into wood chips that we use to control erosion on our trails. Please consider dropping off your used tree when you are done with it. Some guidelines:
- Whole trees only (no clippings)
Remove bags, ornaments, wire, etc.
No wreaths
No yard waste or debris
Volunteers are available to unload cars on Jan. 17 ONLY from 10 a.m. to noon (but you can drop your tree off any time before Jan. 17 and after Dec. 26). Note: No trees accepted after noon on Jan. 17.
Interested in volunteering for this event? Please email HelmerNatureCenter@gmail.com.
SATURDAY SNOWSHOEING AT HELMER!
HNC offers snowshoe rentals on Saturdays in January and February when there is an adequate snow base (minimum of 6 – 8 inches). Note: This excludes 2/7/26 (no snowshoe that day).
