A Message from Superintendent Keith Ahearn
This month, we concluded another successful school year. Summer offers many people an opportunity to slow down, enjoy some warmer weather, plan family getaways, and recharge. It is also a great time to curl up with a good book, in your backyard or on a beach.
I invite families to participate in a summer reading of the book The Amazing Generation by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price. This book is Jonathan Haidt’s follow-up to The Anxious Generation, where he looks at the impact that cell phones and social media have on children. This book is geared towards pre-teens, but can be read by anybody who cares about supporting the mental health and well-being of young people. It is part graphic novel, part testimonial, and most importantly, a call to action.
The Amazing Generation encourages students to reflect on the role technology plays in their lives and challenges them to rediscover the real world around them by putting their phones down and rediscovering the value of friendship, the importance of physical activity and play, the beauty of nature, and the power of human connections.

As you enjoy the stories in the last edition of the 2026-2026 Fast Five, I hope you will consider joining our community summer read and the conversations it might inspire. Whether through a family vacation, a walk in the Metroparks, or a conversation with a friend, summer provides countless opportunities to unplug and reconnect with the world around us.
Thank you for your continued support of the Fairview Park City Schools, and I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and memorable summer.
Sincerely,
Keith Ahearn
Three Fairview graduates from the Class of 2026 answer the call to serve
For three members of the Fairview High School Class of 2026, graduation marks the beginning of a different kind of journey.
Chase Sherlock, Emily Dotson, and Vinny Rizzo have chosen to serve their country through the United States military, embarking on careers defined by service, leadership, and the desire to make a meaningful impact.
This fall, Sherlock will join the United States Air Force, while Dotson and Rizzo will begin their careers in the United States Marine Corps.
Class of 2026 Fairview graduate creates artwork worth a closer look
For most students, advanced engineering coursework and detailed visual art occupy opposite sides of the academic spectrum. For Fairview High School Class of 2026 graduate Isabella Varga, they complement one another.
Varga’s undeniable talent in the arts was on display at the school’s Creative Arts and Design Showcase in May. Like many artists, she tells a story through her artwork, often drawing inspiration from personal interests like music, specifically classic rock.
Her love for painting and the arts started long before Fairview High School, going back to her time as an elementary student at Gilles-Sweet.
“I love art, I always do it at home,” she said. “Every time I have free time, I’m in my craft room painting, drawing, or any kind of art. It’s my number one hobby, pretty much.”
Golden Key Award recognizes Fairview graduate who leads by example
When Fairview High School's first graduating class crossed the stage in 1931, one senior received a special honor recognizing scholarship, service, and character - the Golden Key Award.
More than 90 years later, this long-standing tradition continues for a graduating senior who exemplifies those same qualities. This year, the honor was awarded to Class of 2026 graduate Maura Gillis.
For Gillis, the recognition reflects years of leadership, service, and involvement throughout the school and community. She served as vice president of her class, participated in the National Honor Society and Key Club, competed in cross-country and track and field, and performed in the orchestra.
Class of 2026 graduates carry on Pottorff legacy in education
For decades, Ronald and Nancy Pottorff dedicated their careers to educating students in Fairview Park and Northeast Ohio.
Today, their commitment to education continues through a scholarship at Fairview High School that helps the next generation of teachers pursue the same calling.
This spring, FHS Class of 2026 graduates Lillian Cepulo and Caitlin Pesta were named recipients of the H. Ronald and Nancy B. Pottorff Scholarship. Awarded annually to Fairview seniors pursuing degrees in education, the scholarship honors the legacy of these two longtime Fairview educators who devoted their careers to serving students and the community.
John's Safe Place reaches Fairview's youngest learners at the EEC
A new space at Parkview Early Education Center is giving Fairview Park’s youngest learners a quiet place to pause, process their emotions, and begin learning self-regulation skills.
The new John’s Safe Place at the EEC, created through the John C. Haney Foundation, is one of the latest additions to a growing network of mental health support spaces in Northeast Ohio schools.
John’s Safe Space at the EEC was completed in April 2026 in memory of John Haney, a 2012 Fairview High School graduate and graduate of Baldwin Wallace University, who died in 2017.
John’s Safe Space is designed to provide students with a calm, supervised area where they can decompress, speak with trusted adults, and work through difficult emotions. The space at the EEC is a first for the foundation in a toddler or preschool-level building.
