Yotes Volleyball Picks Up Two Victories in Week 1
The girls volleyball program started the season with a bang last week, playing 3 matches in 4 days against Boulder, Brighton and Arvada West. The Varsity team is relying on the experience of its 5 returning players (Anya Prater, Ali Towns, Petra Rohlinger, Eva Becht and Maya Singh) while counting on the contributions of its 7 new players (Amelia Van Nelson, Emi Zarske, Kate Shima, Maya Grider, Mia Reiley, Ava Maliawco and Shayla Martinez). In addition, the program has JV, C and D teams with talented, eager players.
In their first match of the season, the Varsity team dominated Boulder High School in a convincing 3-set win. The win was a true team effort, with all eligible players seeing court time. Maliawco (12) and Rohlinger (11) stood out for their vicious serves, while Reiley (10) and Becht (12) led the team in kills.
The JV, C and D team also claimed victory, earning Monarch a full sweep for the day.
In the first home game on Tuesday, Monarch earned its second victory over Brighton, winning in 4 sets, with an outstanding all-around performance by Shima (11), as well as stinging serves from Maliawco. The C team also won, while the D team had the day off.
In their last match of the week at Arvada West, the team had a slow start, losing the first 2 sets, but then battling back to win the 3rd set 25-22. The Coyotes kept it close in the 4th set, aided by strong blocking from Martinez (11) but they couldn’t close the gap, and ended up losing to Arvada West 3-1. The JV team had a thrilling final set against AW, trading off game points for several rallies but ended up losing 22-20. The C and D teams both won their matches.
Please come out and support the volleyball teams!
