One week under your belts and everyone’s looking like rock stars. I was so very proud of all of our Kindergartners who came in by themselves today! We promise it gets easier.
I want to give a huge shout-out to our Oakhurst PTA!! They have gone above and beyond to make sure our students have the supplies they need, and our teachers are in great spirits! Please see the PTA section below for information about volunteering and ways to support their amazing efforts this year.
This week’s newsletter is chock-full of all kinds of goodness and helpful information. Please make sure you take a little time to read each part.

Announcements
Teacher Wishlists
In addition to this, some staff at Oakhurst have customarily shared supply wish lists with families via email or online. Please know that these are optional and individualized by the staff member. Wish lists should not be interpreted as an indication that classrooms at Oakhurst or our programming lack supplies or funding. Instead, the lists reflect individual preferences for extra items. Any purchases made from these lists are considered gifts to staff and must follow state guidance and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) rules around gift-giving to public employees, including monetary limits.
If you have any questions about how supplies are funded or how you can support our classrooms, please contact Principal Triplett.
Welcome, Mr. Carl!
Please help us welcome our new crossing guard, Mr. Carl! We'll all miss Ms. Linda, who decided to retire, but we know we're in good hands with Mr. Carl! Be sure to welcome him to Oakhurst and thank him for helping us arrive and depart safely!
School Leadership Team Selections
Oakhurst's School Leadership Team (SLT) is an important crew that is created and guided by CSD's charter. SLT members - including administrative, staff, parent and community representatives - operate as a governing body with the purpose of maximizing school-level decisions. Parent representatives are an elected position and serve two-year terms. There will be two open parent seats this Fall; we will hold an election August 21nd-29th to fill those positions.
The most important requirement of an SLT member is to have an honest desire to contribute to the educational experience and learning of all children at Oakhurst Elementary. We hope you will consider being a part of this very important work! Those interested should complete this form along with a short bio to add to our voting form. Thank you for your support!
This year's SLT Dates are: 10/21, 11/18, 1/20, 2/24, and 3/24 with a December training for all of our teams across the district.
Oakhurst Quicksheets (keep in a safe place!)
A personalized Oakhurst Quicksheet will be coming home in your child's communication folder this week. In addition to important dates and school contact information, this sheet has your child's CSD Launchpad login information so keep it safe and handy in the event we need it during an inclement weather day. Your family is also encouraged to practice reading together using the resources on the back of the sheet. If you have any questions or need more copies of your child's Quicksheet, please email eguerrieri@csdecatur.net
Any device that has a camera and access to the internet can be used to access Launchpad!
What is Brain Gym?
This year, Ms. Lockwood and Dr. Hartnett are excited to continue their 30-minute weekly innovative critical and creative thinking program.
Classes focus on building students’ thinking muscles through engaging activities. Students will learn to look for clues to solve complex problems (Detective thinking), figure out visual thinking and perception challenges (Magician thinking), learn to categorize and analyze information (Scientist thinking), explore language, storytelling, and writing skills (Yarnspinner thinking), generate creative solutions to real world problems (Inventor thinking), and make informed, balanced decisions (Judge thinking).
Critical and creative thinking are essential life skills and our goal is for every student to leave Oakhurst with the ability to find solutions to problems, persevere through challenges, and actively seek new knowledge by asking questions.
If you have any questions about this program, please contact Amanda Lockwood at alockwood@csdecatur.net or Courtney Hartnett at chartnett@csdecatur.net
Student Leadership Opportunity Available
Applications for the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council opened on August 5. Families may access the application through Launchpad. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 22, at 5 p.m. Selected students will be notified by Friday, August 29, 2025. This is an amazing student leadership opportunity, and we're excited for Oakhurst to be represented.
Food Insecurity Request Form
Oakhurst families, please complete and submit this food insecurity request form if your student is experiencing food insecurity within the home and is in need of some supplemental weekend snacks.
The Decatur Education Foundation supplies Oakhurst with snack bags for any student in need. This request form will go directly to our school counselor, Ms. King, and she will send home a snack bag with your student every Friday. Please go through each week's snack bag to remove any snack you may not want your child to have due to allergy concerns, etc.
District News
Last year, Claire the Bulldog dove across the finish line to win the first-ever CSD Mascot Run for Clairemont Elementary. Who will break the tape and take home the trophy this year?
Come out to cheer for your school mascot on August 8 during the first DHS home game of the season. The game starts at 7 p.m., and the race will take place during half-time. Plus, long-time Decatur Bulldog Booster sponsor Keller Knapp Realty is giving away cowbells for fans, so get ready to make some noise for your school and your Decatur Bulldogs! Elementary students get in free with a paid adult!
