Reading
FIRST MONTH DOWN!
We have almost completed the first month of school. It's hard to believe that we've already been back for this long.
This month in reading students have been working on developing relationships and creating a learning community where all feel welcome and safe to take risks, share, and support each other. Students have taken part in beginning of the year reading benchmarking. We have also been reviewing previously studied reading concepts and practicing class routines and procedures. As a way to introduce some spelling routines and games, students have been working on learning the most commonly misspelled words. We will finish up our review of syllable division rules this week and begin our weekly fluency reading routines. As we move into October, we will explore stories that contain literary techniques that create a sense of suspense!
If you weren't able to attend Back To School night, I have shared my slides from the night.
Civics
This month in civics, students have been focusing on Unit 1: We the People - Identity and Community. Students have learned about what civics means and what they will be studying this year. Students have been looking at what identity means personally, locally, and as a country. Students are wrapping up the first unit of the year by working together in pairs to research a region of the United States and create an identity map about that US region.
