News From the Hallway

Next week is a busy one! This week we welcomed students back into the building during orientations for each class. Next week we welcome you back for three days of professional development. Please plan on working either Monday or Friday as I believe we have four teacher work days planned for next week.

As you know, there are three scheduled professional development days. Earlier in the week, I sent an email with details about this planned PD. There were a few tasks outlined in that email, that, if completed, will fully prepare you for the PD next week. Thank you for taking the time to do this work.

To summarize, August 20 will include district activities in the PAC from 8:00 to 9:00 (breakfast and vendor fair from 7:00 to 8:00). We will then be back in the PHS library for staff activities from 9:15 to 11:00. Lunch will be on your own from 11:00 to 12:00, and there will be additional staff activities in the afternoon from 12:00 to 1:00. Each teacher will have time to work in classrooms from 1:00 to 3:00.

Also scheduled for Tuesday, August 20 is our school open house. Directly after that will be our All Sports Kick-Off event in the PAC as well. I am using the All Sports Kick-Off event as a meet and greet opportunity in the lobby of the PAC after we dismiss students to groups at around 7:30. If you would like to drop-in please feel free to do so. I am hoping to meet families, students, and staff that I have not yet been introduced to, and believe it will be a lot of fun as well. Thank you to Melissa, our Athletic Director, for making this event possible.

On Wednesday, August 21 we will have three hours of virtual Schoology training accompanied by three hours of working with the Schoology platform itself. What you do during these three hour block of times is dependent upon when you signed up for the Schoology training. A sign up sheet was sent out by Mrs. Beals earlier in the week. Bagels and coffee will be provided on Wednesday.

On Thursday, August 22, Communications By Design will be with us to discuss work your building leadership team engaged in on Monday, August 19. We will then continue that work as a staff next Thursday. Lunch will be provided from Four Roses. Please don't forget that we are working to raise food for our food drive. Wood TV 8 will be at our school at 6:00 AM on Thursday, August 29, the day of our first football game. You are all welcome to attend. I look forward to seeing you next week. Enjoy your weekend!

Shout Outs!

This week our counseling department stepped up on behalf of our students and put together orientations that went well. Although we encountered a couple of snafus, Emily Johnson, Susan Johnson, Jessica Hembree, Sue Gower, and Brandy Wheeler were able to provide excellent workarounds allowing our students to get pictures taken and their schedules in an efficient manner. Thank you to our school counseling staff for your efforts in preparation, planning, and execution. Well done!

Thank you also to each individual for attending one of the thirty minute sessions with me. I enjoyed meeting our staff, and getting to know everyone on a more personal level. I have learned much about our school, our staff, and the work in which each person is engaged. Many invited me into their rooms or work areas to see how their daily work is organized. I wanted to highlight those individuals who met with me and thank each person for taking time out your busy schedules to spend time getting to know me better. I continue to be thrilled to be part of the Trojan Family!

Angela Lee Duckworth: Grit: The power of passion and perseverance

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.
