Ways to Participate in the Rightsizing Conversation

PPS is continuing its conversation about school Rightsizing, and families have several opportunities to ask questions, share their experiences, and provide feedback directly to district leaders:

  • Speak with the Superintendent: The Superintendent will be at Kellogg Middle School on November 5, time TBD

  • Meet Board Member Virginia La Forte at Atkinson: Our PTA has arranged for Board Member Virginia La Forte to visit Atkinson on Wednesday, October 28. She will stop by our Día de los Muertos celebration at 2:30 p.m. and then stay to listen and talk with families in the gym.

  • Attend another engagement opportunity: View the district’s Rightsizing Engagement Calendar.

  • Write to School Board members: Visit the PPS Board of Education page or email written comments to schoolboard@pps.net. PPS confirms that written comments may be submitted to this address. Portland School District

  • Complete the district survey: Share your perspective through the Rightsizing Scenario Feedback Survey. The district states that survey responses will help shape the final recommendations presented to the School Board.

Your experiences and perspectives matter. Whether you support aspects of the proposal, have concerns, or still have questions, I encourage you to participate and help district leaders understand how these decisions may affect Atkinson’s students, families, and school community.

In service to students,

Debbie Armendariz

Principal

Atkinson Elementary School

School Main Number: (503) 916-6333

  • Tuesday: Monochrome Day (wear all one color)
  • Wednesday: Dress Like a Teacher

OCTOBER IS ADHD AWARENESS MONTH

Many children sometimes struggle with attention, organization, or impulse control—but when these challenges persist, families may wonder whether an ADHD evaluation could be helpful. Our latest family resource explains what teachers may notice, what an evaluation can provide, and how understanding a child’s needs can lead to more effective support—not a label. ATKINSON AT THE VILLAGE TABLE [REPEAT]

Hello Atkinson Community,

I'm Sally Foster, Atkinson parent to a 1st and 3rd grader, and our principal invited me to join a local organization called The Village Table. It is a districtwide space that brings together community representatives across Portland. As part of the Village Table, I am working with PPS to ensure our community's real experiences shape the rightsizing decisions.

As your Village Table representative, my role is to listen, ask questions and bring perspectives from our school community back into the conversation. I encourage you to share your questions, concerns and perspectives with me at this email, VillageTable@atkinsonpta.org and to participate in upcoming opportunities to provide feedback.

Please take a few minutes to complete our Community Check-In Survey. We want to hear what you’re thinking and hearing about rightsizing, what still feels uncertain, and what you want district leaders to understand about our school community. I’ll help carry those perspectives into upcoming Village Table conversations.

Atkinson Village Table Rep and Neighborhood Parent,
Sally Foster

SE Portland 4th grade boys basketball team

Join the SE Portland neighborhood 4th grade boys Goldenball team!

Goldenball is a basketball league operated by Portland Parks and Recreation. The team is looking for 8–10 4th grade boys with an interest in basketball. Whether you’ve played a couple of years and are looking to take the next step in your development or you’re excited to play basketball for the first time, this is a great opportunity to have fun, build community, and learn life lessons through an amazing sport!

There will be two practices a week (one hour each) starting in mid-November and ending in early March. Practices are hosted at nearby elementary schools. (Dates and times are not available yet.)

Games are played on Saturdays, and they start in mid-January and run through early March. They are about an hour long and are played at SE and NE area schools. (Game dates and times have not been announced yet.) The goal is to have a team finalized in early October.

EMERGENCY DRILLS SCHEDULE

PPS works hard to ensure that all staff and students are trained to respond effectively and efficiently during an emergency at or near school. One of the many ways we accomplish this is through our mandatory drill requirements. These drills are essential in ensuring our school community is as prepared as possible for emergency situations. Atkinson's emergency drill schedule for the remainder of the school year is as follows:

  • Monday, November 2 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Thursday, November 5 — Secure the Perimeter
  • Thursday, December 3 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Tuesday, January 5 — Team Response
  • Friday, January 8 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Monday, February 8 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Tuesday, March 2 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Friday, March 12 — Lockdown
  • Thursday, April 15 — Earthquake and Evacuation
  • Friday, May 14 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Monday, June 7 — Fire/Evacuation
