Husky Happenings Week of November 1, 2026

Hi Families,

I hope your Trick or Treating experience was fun and safe and that your children hit the candy lottery. My own children, and now the grands, love to go through everything afterwards to tally up what they got. It's a good sorting activity, too, lol. It is likely that your children will want a sweet treat for snack or their lunch dessert this week but please keep in mind a couple of things. Please remind children that they are not to share their candy and please remind them that any candy containing nut products has to be consumed in the cafeteria only. The Health and Wellness policy is linked below for your review.

The Kindergarten Parade on Friday was the highlight of the week! The children were so excited as were the adults as you will see in the pictures below.

New menus are posted below as well as report card information, and there is no school on Tuesday due to Election Day. All of the schools are polling locations.

Coventry Public Schools Parent Corner:

On the district web page (www.coventryschools.net) you will find a Parent Corner Page that provides information about things like registration, Title I, lunch information, Parent Portal tech help, etc. I have linked the page above for your reference.

Policy Corner Policy Corner

In this section we'll feature different district policies or state laws that serve as the basis for a lot of the decisions/rules that schools follow. Generally, the state will pass legislation and the school district will create policy based on that legislation. The district has a policy committee that meets regularly with our superintendents to review new legislation and existing policy to make sure they are aligned. I think the title is linkable if not click here - District Policy Manual to take a look at all of them.

Attendance Policy, Part 1

This week, we will begin tacking the beast that is the Attendance Policy. We'll start the way the policy starts, which is which some definitions so that we proceed from a common understanding. Here are some terms you will hear us use in reference to your child's attendance. I'll highlight some of the things of which you may not be aware.

Absent

A student is considered absent if the student has missed fifty percent (50%) or more of the school

day based upon the hours of school at the elementary level and the number of periods at the

secondary level.

Attendance

The behavioral act of being present at school and attending classes. A student is considered absent

regardless of whether it is for an excused reason or designated as unexcused. Attendance is marked

in the student information system daily. (Remember, we have talked about the fact that while we mark absences as excused or unexcused, RIDE does not differentiate and records all absences as absences.)

Chronically Absent

A student who is absent ten percent (10%) or more of their days during the full school year.

Students that miss two or more days per month are on track to be chronically absent.

Excessively Absent

A student who is missing twenty percent (20%) or more of classes or school days for any reason.

Excused Absence

Excused absences do not count toward truancy but are still considered an absence. The

following reasons for an absence are considered excused with appropriate written

documentation, unless waived by the building administrator. For example;

● Note from a medical or healthcare provider

● Student’s participation in a school-sponsored activity

● Court appearance, summons or other dated court documentation

● Confirmation in writing from a college/university regarding a college visit

● Out-of-school suspension

● Death in the family

● Family emergency (Building administrator discretion)

● Religious holidays

Excused Tardy

A student will be considered to have an excused tardy when they enter the school building after the

designated arrival time due to any reason listed under the definition of an excused absence. (An example would be a doctor's appointment, but get a d0ctor's note, and we will document that.)

Early Dismissal

A student will be considered to have departed early from school when the student leaves the

building or class prior to the designated dismissal time. The early dismissal is considered excused due to any reason listed under the definition of an excused absence. (An example would be a doctor's appointment, but get a d0ctor's note, and we will document that.)

* Keep in mind that even with appointments, a child must be present for 50% or more of the school day.

Next week, we'll dive into what we are required to do when absences, tardies, or dismissals are over the limit.

Report Cards:

Report Cards will be available on the parent portal on November 13. You might want to check your access if you haven't done so already this year so we can trouble shoot any problems before it gets crazy next week.

FOOD SERVICE LINKS Update

My School Bucks should be up and running for you to make deposits to your child's account. Please check your child's balance on My School Bucks. Balances do carry over from year to year and an email can be missed so please make sure you are checking. Even if you think your child isn't ordering breakfast or lunch, they could very well be and at the elementary level children are typically not going to be turned away unless a parent tells us directly that their child is not to order. This is the reason that the district sends the balance notifications directly to parents.

Hopkins Hill Food Pantry: Hopkins Hill operates a very active food pantry throughout the school year. As part of this operation, we provide biweekly grocery deliveries from our food pantry supplies to any family that might be having a difficult time. All food pantry inquiries are confidential. You can call me, Nurse Deb, or Ms Petrarca if you are interested. Reach out should any emergency arise and we are prepared to assist or help you find assistance.

Attendance:

RIDE ATTENDANCE TOOL REPORT: Still below the percentage we want to see, the number of students appearing on the chronically absent list is 36 as of Friday, a significant drop from 50 the week before. The percentage also dropped from 16% chronically absent to 12% keeping in mind our ideal goal is below 10% and preferably 8-9%. You will be able to see absence totals on the report cards when they come out next week and you can also see attendance by checking the Parent Portal. We appreciate when you are able to return children to school after Dr appointments and just ask that you monitor the "just because" absences that are unexcused especially if your child has already missed 10% or more of the school year or is close. We are more than willing to work with you if you are having trouble getting your child to school.

Notes From Nurse Deb Notes From Nurse Deb

Just a reminder that any medications that need to be administered by Nurse Deb at school need a doctor's order. Please reach out to Nurse Deb if you have questions about back to school medications.

ENCORE, Physical Education and Health ENCORE, Physical Education and Health

Please click on the link to Mrs. Marran's Website.

Mrs. Marran is our primary physical education and health teacher. We also have Ms Hayes on Friday mornings.

Students in K-5 have been participating in the Second Step Bullying Prevention unit. Students learn about the 3 R's, different types of bullying and how to be an Upstander.

The 3 R's are:

Recognize- How to determine if something is bullying or a mean moment. Bullying happens over and over, is unfair, one-sided, and the person it is happening to cannot get it to stop! A mean moment is more of a conflict or argument, it is two-sided and while it is unkind, students can find a solution with or without an adult.

Refuse- How to tell a Bully to stop bullying

Report- How to report bullying to a trusted adult who will listen

All grade levels have done a great job participating in different scenarios and understanding the difference between bullying and a conflict!
